Simonetta Sannas Untersuchung widmet sich unter dem Titel „Die Quadratur des Kreises“ dem Schlußkapitel von Döblins Berlin Alexanderplatz. Ausgangspunkt ihrer Analyse ist die Annahme, Döblin diskutiere im neunten Buch seines Romans den Zusammenhang von Stadt und Wahnsinn. Die Döblin-Forschung sei, so Sannas kritische Bilanz, dem Epilog bislang ausgewichen, die Mehrheit der vorliegenden Untersuchungen zu Berlin Alexanderplatz sei einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem neunten Buch „systematisch aus dem Weg“ gegangen, und zwar ungeachtet der Tatsache, daß die Irrenanstalt am Ende des Buchs und damit am Ende des Bildungswegs von Franz Biberkopf stehe. Der Zusammenhang von Stadt und Wahnsinn sei dementsprechend nicht genügend berücksichtigt worden, auch habe man die Kontinuitäten zwischen den Büchern 1 bis 8 und dem Romanende aus den Augen verloren. Ihre Überlegungen hingegen gehen von der Annahme aus, daß die „Auflösung nicht nur keinen Bruch mit den vorliegenden Ereignissen“ darstelle, sondern das neunte Buch des Romans gar als ein „Umschlagspunkt, von dem erst Licht auf das Ganze fällt“ (S. 31), verstanden werden müsse. Dem Helden möchte die Verfasserin „bis hin zu seiner Kapitulation in die Bilderwelt des Wahnsinns […] folgen“ (S. 30), aus literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive sicherlich ein ebenso fragwürdiges wie schwieriges Unterfangen.
