Background: Nurse-led pulmonary rehabilitation program is an evidence-based, comprehensive intervention designed to enhance long-term compliance to health-promotion behaviors, thus improving the physical and psychological condition and quality of life of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the nurse-led pulmonary rehabilitation program on dyspnea and fatigue for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease through 1) Assess of patients' health status 2) Develop and implement a nurse-led pulmonary rehabilitation program based on patients' needs.3) Evaluate the effect of nurse-led pulmonary rehabilitation programs on patients' outcomes regarding the severity of dyspnea and fatigue among studied patients. Design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized for the conduction of this study. Setting: This study was conducted at the chest department and Outpatient clinics at Ain shams University Hospital. Sample: A purposive sample of 86 adult patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was selected and randomly divided into two equal groups (study & control groups, 43 for each one). Tools: four tools were used in this study; Patients structured interview questionnaire, Observational Checklist, Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale, and Fatigue Severity Scale. The findings of this study revealed that majority of the study group in post and follow up had satisfactory level of knowledge, competent level of performance, grade 2 for their level of breathlessness with activity. Meanwhile, they had a decreased level of fatigue severity. The study concluded that there was a highly statistically significant improvement of patient knowledge, practice, as well as, decreasing dyspnea and fatigue severity for the study group in the post and follow-up program implementation. This study recommended that further research studies are needed to develop systemically continuous self-management programs for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease as ameans for improving the health status of those patients.
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders worldwide. Nurses play a critical role in promoting the best health outcomes for people with epilepsy by imparting information about the disease and advancing evidence-based practices which are considered the gold standard in the delivery of health care Aim: To evaluate the effect of implementation of evidence based guidelines regarding epilepsy management for patients and their family members Design: A quasi-experimental research design was used. Setting: The study was conducted at neurologic outpatient clinic, affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospitals, Cairo, Egypt. Sample: A purposive sample of 60 patients and 60 family members were attended at the mentioned setting. Tools: Three tools were used: (1) Structured interview questionnaire included: patients' demographic characteristics, family members' demographic characteristics and knowledge assessment questionnaire. (2) Epilepsy risk awareness scale, (3) Family members' reported practices questionnaire. Results: There were high statistically significant differences between total satisfactory scores of knowledge of the studied patients and family members pre to post implementation. There were high statistically significant differences between some scores of personal safety and health care and all quality of life scores of studied patients pre to post implementation. As well, there was high statistically significant difference between reported practices scores of the studied family members pre to post implementation. Conclusion: The implementation of evidenced based guidelines had positive effects on knowledge and awareness of the studied patients, as well, on knowledge and attitudes of family members regarding epilepsy management. Recommendations: There is a need to activate implementation of epileptic guidelines manual in the hospitals.
Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) fronts a threat disease to the health of millions of people and is a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. The use of new digital health technology helps in providing quality assured education, as well, it has been proved to positively affect self-care practices. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a smartphonebased educational program on self-care practices for hepatitis C patients. Design: A quasiexperimental research design was utilized in this study. Setting: This study was conducted at the medical outpatient clinic affiliated to El Nasr Insurance Hospital. Sample: A purposive sample of 100 Hepatitis C patients was selected and randomly divided into two equal groups. Tools of data collection: One tool was used, Patients' structured interview questionnaire: it included four parts: Part 1) Patients' demographic characteristics, Part 2: Past medical history. Part 3) patients' level of knowledge regarding HCV, and Part 4) patients' self-care reported practices. Results: The mean age of the study and control groups were (39.70 ±7.74) and (39.560 ±9.532) respectively. The majority of study group had satisfactory knowledge scores post smart phone program, the minority of study group had a good level of self-care practices in the pre-program phase compared to the majority of them post smart phone program implementation Conclusion: There were highly significant improvements in total knowledge scores, reported self-care practices post smartphone educational program among study group than control group. Recommendation: Updated counseling regarding self-care practices must be included in the hepatitis C management standardized protocols.
