In einer Versuchsanlage wurden Paraffin‐Gemische mit Schwefeldioxid und Sauerstoff zu den entsprechenden Alkylsulfonaten umgesetzt (Sulfoxidation), wobei γ‐Strahlen aus einer Kobalt‐60‐Bestrahlungsanlage verwendet wurden. Die Raum/Zeit‐Ausbeute ist bei 20 °C unabhängig von der Verweilzeit im Reaktor, sie nimmt jedoch proportional mit der Wurzel aus der Dosisleistung zu und mit steigender Temperatur ab. Mit steigendem Gasdurchsatz nähert sich die Ausbeute einem Grenzwert.
Bisher wurde die energiereiche Strahlung bei der Synthese von Athylbromid und bei der Bestrahlung von Kunststoffen zur Herstellung von Schrumpf-Folien, Kabelisolierungen und Halbleitern in der chemischen Technik angewendet. Da die Bestrahlungskosten gesenkt werden konnten und technologische Erfahrungen fur strahlenchemische Reaktionen vorliegen, erscheint es moglich, daB auch einige bereits im Technikumsmab stab erprobte Verfahren fur die groljtechnische Produktion ausgenutzt werden konnen, wie z. B. die Synthese von Sulfonsauren, die Polymerisation von Athylen oder die Herstellung eines harten Holz-Kunststoff-Materials. -Es wird ein Uberblick uber den Stand der Technik auf diesem Gebiet gegeben.Die Strahlenchemie hat sich in den letzten Jahren einen festen Platz neben den anderen Zweigen der Chemie erobern konnen. Die wesentlichen Impulse fur diese Arbeitsrichtung kamen von der Ketrntechnik. Aber erst seit der Konstruktion von Kernreaktoren war es gelungen, so groRe Mengen an radioaktivem Material herzustellen, daR damit experimentell gearbeitet werden konnte. Auch die Entwicklung von leistungsstarken, wenig storanfalligen Maschinen, die sowohl beschleunigte Teilchen (Elektronen) als auch Rontgenstrahlung erzeugen, war fur diese neue Arbeitsrichtung Voraussetzung.Im Labormaastab sind auf dem Gebiet der Strahlenchemie in den vergangenen Jahren zahlreiche Reaktionen untersucht worden, die eine Fiille von Reaktionsmoglichkeiten aufzeigen. Der Gedanke, die Strahlenenergie technisch auszuwerten, ist bereits friih aufgetaucht. Dies zeigt ein Patent') uber die Oxydation von SO, zu SO, von 1909. Die Ubertragung einer Reaktion vom LabormaRstab zum groRtechnischen Verfahren wirft aber viele Probleme auf, die teils aus der konventionellen chemischen Technik bekannt sind, teils aber vollig neue Fragestellungen enthalten.Die Moglichkeiten einer industriellen Nutzung strahlenchemischer Verfahren wurden in den letzten Jahren von mehreren Seiten bereits lebhaft diskutiertP5). Aus der Vielzahl der untersuchten Reaktionen mit y-Strahlung haben vorlaufig nur solche mit groRem G-Wert') eine Aussicht auf eine technische Realisierung.Hohe G-Werte haben nur Kettenreaktionen, wie Polymerisationen, Oxydationen oder auch Sulfochlorierungen. Reaktionen, die zwar kaum fur eine groRtechnische Produktion ausgenutzt werden konnten, die aber vielleicht in kleinem MaRstab interessant werden, sind u. a. solche, die zu biologisch wirksamen Stoffen (Sterinen) oder Verbindungen fiihren, die evtl. als Katalysatoren dienen konnen. Reaktionen mit k 1 e i n e n G-Werten haben fur eine industrielle Verwertung demgegenuber wahrscheinlich nur dann Chancen, wenn die Ruckstoljenergie der Spaltprodukte strahlenchemisch genutzt werden kann, wenn also spezielle Reaktortypen konstruiert und gebaut werden. Eine solche Entwicklung durfte aber in naher Zukunft kaum verwirklicht werden konnen.Der G-Wert ist ein Ma8 fur die strahlenchemische Ausbeute.
