Pure metals are generally believed to be immune to stress corrosion cracking (i).The present communication reports transgranular stress corrosion cracking of commercially pure (99.9%) copper and Marz Grade (better than 99.996%) copper in naturally aerated IM NaNO 2 solution at room temperature.Earlier, Pugh et. al. (2) had reported intergranular stress corrosion cracking of 99.999% Cu in %15N NH40H solution.
