In the current work, the bulk (1−x)BiFeO3–xBaTiO3 system has been studied as a potential lead‐free piezoelectric material. Barium titanate (BaTiO3) in solid solution with bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) is observed to stabilize the perovskite structure and improve switching behavior. Samples with various content of BaTiO3 were prepared via solid‐state route, and pure perovskite phase was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction. Modification of the BaTiO3–BiFeO3 material with Mn improved DC resistivity by one to five orders of magnitude (7.6 × 1012 vs. 2.7 × 107Ω·m for 25 mol% BaTiO3 at room temperature) and polarization hysteresis measurements indicated “hard” ferroelectric behavior with the highest strain response at 33 mol% BaTiO3. Finally, low‐field piezoelectric d33 coefficient of 116 pC/N and ferroelectric transition temperature above 450°C are reported for 25 mol% BaTiO3 composition.

Environmental concerns are strongly driving the need to replace the lead-based piezoelectric materials currently employed as multilayer actuators. The current review describes both compositional and structural engineering approaches to achieve enhanced piezoelectric properties in lead-free materials. The review of the compositional engineering approach focuses on compositional tuning of the properties and phase behavior in three promising families of lead-free perovskite ferroelectrics: the titanate, alkaline niobate and bismuth perovskites and their solid solutions. The 'structural engineering' approaches focus instead on optimization of microstructural features including grain size, grain orientation or texture, ferroelectric domain size and electrical bias field as potential paths to induce large piezoelectric properties in lead-free piezoceramics. It is suggested that a combination of both compositional and novel structural engineering approaches will be required in order to realize viable lead-free alternatives to current lead-based materials for piezoelectric actuator applications.

The equimolar alloy FeCoCrNi, a high-entropy alloy, forms in the face-centered-cubic crystal structure and has a ferromagnetic Curie temperature of 130 K. In this study, we explore the effects of Cr concentration, cold-rolling, and subsequent heat treatments on the magnetic properties of FeCoCrxNi alloys. Cr reductions result in an increase of the Curie temperature, and may be used to tune the TC over a very large temperature range. The magnetic entropy change for a change in applied field of 2T is ΔSm = −0.35 J/(kg K) for cold-rolled FeCoCrNi. Cold-rolling results in a broadening of ΔSm, where subsequent heat treatment at 1073 K sharpens the magnetic entropy curve. In all of the alloys, we find that upon heating (after cold-rolling) there is a re-entrant magnetic moment near 730 K. This feature is much less pronounced in the as-cast samples (without cold-rolling) and in the Cr-rich samples, and is no longer observed after annealing at 1073 K. Possible origins of this behavior are discussed.
