The three-shaft KTT system, a new concept in the field of vehicular gas turbines, is described. It consists of an integrated turbine-transmission system. Major engineering advances are incorporated with improvements in overall engine-transmission performance. This, in turn, improves the fuel economy, simplicity, weight, and first cost of the whole power system. A new principle is described for achieving both rapid acceleration and deceleration. The KTT system approach, because of reduced stresses, also makes possible earlier use of low-cost ceramics in high-temperature rotors. The improvements embodied in the KTT system make it possible for a gas-turbine power system of this type to seriously compete with present diesel power plants. When developed to its full potential, such a turbine package can surpass diesel capabilities by a wide margin.
This paper gives a brief description of the Volvo experimental turbine, its working cycle, its basic components and their relative arrangement as well as some of the basic thinking behind the selection of the same. The paper also gives a short description of the new concept of a dual-geared power turbine, the combined reduction gear and high-speed hydrodynamic retarder, as well as some other new features incorporated.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
