SUMMARY
Leg before wicket decisions in test cricket series have sparked some controversy in recent years. In particular, series played in Australia have drawn much criticism from the media and from individual players in visiting teams, as well as from the general public both in Australia and overseas. It has been suggested that the umpiring in test series in Australia has been biased towards Australian teams. This paper uses logistic regression to analyse data from the test cricket series played in Australia from 1977 to 1994. It is found that, of the seven teams which have played against Australia over this period, three have significantly higher rates of leg before wicket decisions given against them than were given against Australia. Although this could be seen to be due to a bias towards Australian teams, other factors could account for these differences.
In the last decade, Australian higher education institutions have become a destination for many international students, mainly from South East Asia. If their educational culture is quite different to the Australian educational culture, then their approaches to learning might be different to that of local students. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the approaches to learning of students in statistics units and relate these to background variables such as country of origin, gender and work commitments. This study is significant because there are many international students at Macquarie University and no data of this type has been collected for our students in the past. Our analyses showed that there were no significant differences in the approaches to learning of local and international; and male and female students; however, we found a significant difference between undergraduate and postgraduate students, with postgraduates more likely to adopt deep strategies to learning.
There were no significant differences in any demographic variables between the users of HRT and the non-users. The same level of QOL was observed between HRT and non-HRT groups in the four domains of well-being. The majority of women with breast cancer recovered to a near normal level of QOL after a 4-year adjustment period, and lead fulfilling lives. This adjustment period cannot be quantified, as individual factors such as emotional, social and financial concerns will differ for each individual.
