L'intérêt que porte l'historiographie à la notabilité peut être assez facilement reconduit à une occasion précise, celle de la communication tenue par Ernest Labrousse au X e Congrès international des sciences historiques tenu à Rome en 1955. À cette occasion, Labrousse présenta une contribution de nature méthodologique au titre assez significatif, Voies nouvelles vers une histoire de la bourgeoisie occidentale aux XVIII e et XIX e siècles 1 , dans laquelle il invitait la communauté à abandonner les discussions sur les catégories et les modèles, et à engager des recherches sur le terrain pour observer la bourgeoisie et en compter la consistance. C'est dans ce but qu'il signala quelques sources importantes, parmi lesquelles les archives électorales et, en particulier, les « listes par cens, grand répertoire des notables » de la période napoléonienne. Dès le début, donc, la volonté d'étudier les notables de la France « napoléonienne » apparaît caractérisée par deux éléments fortement marqués et qui auraient orienté considérablement les études à venir : à savoir, l'équation notable/bourgeois et le recours à une approche essentiellement quantitative et sérielle, en hommage à un choix méthodologique qui de l'histoire économique s'étendait également à l'histoire sociale et qui, dans les années 1960 et 1970, auraient donné en France ses meilleurs résultats. 2 Justement, à la suite de cette intervention importante, les études initialement consacrées à des départements spécifiques se multiplièrent rapidement. Ainsi, déjà au 84 e Congrès national des Société savantes, tenu à Dijon en 1959, furent présentées les recherches de Maurice Agulhon intitulées Les sources statistiques de l'histoire des notables au début du XIX e siècle dans les archives d'un département. Le Var, et de R. Dufraisse, Les notables de la rive gauche du Rhin. Cependant, il faut attendre les célébrations du bicentenaire de la naissance de Napoléon pour que l'intérêt sur la notabilité, nourri également par la profonde révision des paradigmes interprétatifs de la Révolution française et par le refus d'une lecture rigide et classique du phénomène révolutionnaire 2 , retourne avec force sur le devant de la scène, grâce aux nombreuses contributions présentées dans la troisième Les notables napoléoniens : du cas français à celui italien Rives méditerranéennes, 32-33 | 2010
