Die Reinigung von Baustoffoberflächen unter Einsatz hochenergiereicher Laserstrahlung ist eine erfolgreiche Methode zur Graffiti‐Entfernung auf Kunst‐ und Natursteinfassaden. Diese Methode entfernt einfache Farbanstriche mit einem optisch ansprechenden Ergebnis, ohne daß eine Materialschädigung festgestellt werden kann. Bei der Betrachtung mit dem bloßen Auge oder bei geringer Vergrößerung erscheinen die behandelten Oberflächen farbfrei. Im Rasterelektronenmikroskop zeigt sich jedoch, daß immer ein mehr oder weniger ausgeprägter Farbfilm zurückbleibt. Vermutlich sind diese Filme jedoch so porös und dünn, daß sie als optisch transparent erscheinen und so keine Beeinträchtigung darstellen.
Eine Einschränkung der Effektivität der Methode ergibt sich bisher nur aus der Oberflächenbeschaffenheit der Probe, d. h., glatte Oberflächen sind besser zu reinigen als poröse. Die Effektivität der Methode sinkt zudem mit steigendem Reflexionsvermögen der Farbe. Bei weißer Beschichtung wurden durchweg schlechtere Reinigungsergebnisse als bei schwarz beschichteten Proben erzielt. Die Methode kann auch dann angewendet werden, wenn mehrere Farbschichten übereinanderliegen. Dabei sollten die zu entfernende Schicht genügend dünn und der Untergrund stark reflektierend sein.
