A conventional two-stage servo valve basically consists of an electrically operated torque motor as the first stage and spool valve as the second stage. Owing to the limitation in the band width, servo valves are not suitable for high-frequency applications. The work presented in this paper deals with the methodology of the mechatronics approach for the design of a piezoelectric actuator with a mechanical amplifier and its integration into a servo valve. The analysis and simulation of a multilayer piezoelectric actuator (MLA) a with mechanical amplifier for high-frequency application has been done using icon-based bond graph technique and finite element coupled field analysis for the commercially available piezoelectric actuator. The designed piezoelectric actuator was integrated into an existing flapper-nozzle servo valve by replacing the first stage. The dynamics of the valve integrated into a piezoelectric actuator has been simulated. The required simulation parameters for the actuator have been derived from a finite element model. An experimental set-up has been designed and the integrated testing of the servo valve with piezoelectric actuator has been carried out to determine the no-load flow gain of the valve. Also the time response has been measured for a conventional servo valve and servo valve with piezoelectric actuator. The designed valve with a piezoelectric actuator has satisfactory static and dynamic characteristics for high-speed applications.

The electric drives used for vehicle propulsion need to be highly efficient and high power dense to improve the performance of electric vehicles (EV) and make them competent in transportation applications. In the similar lines, this paper proposes a radial flux brushless direct current (BLDC) motor with surface magnet rotor with a Halbach array. The magnetic equivalent circuit of the motor is derived; nonlinear electromagnetic analysis carried out and arrived at performance characteristics for an EV propulsion. The proposed topology is compared with conventional BLDC motor with surface mount magnets and found an increment of 20% in power density. The hardware is realized, tested for its performance and the results are closely matching with design parameters.

The torque motor is an intricate assembly in electro-hydraulic technology and plays a crucial role in converting the electrical signal into controlled mechanical output signal. It involves many precise components, such as the feedback spring, armature and its coil, permanent magnet, feed pipe, flexure shaft, jetpipe, and flexure support. The components are embedded together as a single operating component. Each component contributes to the effective dynamics of the system. The present paper proposes a novel approach to investigate the effect of critical parameters on the working design dynamics of the torque motor employed in the jetpipe electro-hydraulic servovalve. Based on the principles of mechatronics, a mathematical model is developed. The model-based design approach is employed to investigate the dynamics of the system. The required simulation parameters of the critical and precision components were obtained from solid and finite element (FE) models. The solid and FE models of the critical and precision components were first analyzed with suitable boundary and loading conditions to establish the stiffness. To validate the obtained FE results, experiments were carried out with a specially designed and fabricated test setup. Based on the basic principle of electromagnetics, a nonlinear FE model of torque motor is analyzed for magnetic field distribution, the torque developed, and armature and jetpipe deflection for varied input current. From the results obtained, good agreement was observed between FE, simulated, and experimental values. The present novel approach enables one to improve the working design dynamics of the torque motor.
