Two methods of representing geodetic positions conformally as plane coordinates are discussed and compared with the method given in the Notes on Projection, now a classic, published by the Federal Surveys of Nigeria in the 1920s. Results show the existence of some systematic errors in the Nigerian system due to inadequacy of the formulae used. Now that Nigeria has gone over to the UTM system, it is recommended that plane coordinates be computed directly from original observations. These will also serve as a check on coordinates converted from the existing values.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
