Entgegen der vielfach geäußerten Erwartung, die PDS sei ein Phänomen, das innerhalb einiger Jahre nach der Wiedervereinigung von der politischen Bühne verschwinden würde, hat sich die SED-Nachfolgepartei im deutschen Parteiensystem fest etabliert. Dies belegen beispielsweise ihre dauerhaften Wahlerfolge auf allen Ebenen des bundesdeutschen politischen Systems. Empirische Analysen der fast ausschließlich ostdeutschen Anhängerschaft der PDS beschäftigen sich in der Regel mit den Gründen für die Wahlentscheidung zugunsten dieser Partei. Vor dem Hintergrund der häufig vorgenommenen Charakterisierung der PDS als Vertreterin spezifisch ostdeutscher Interessen scheint jedoch besonders die Frage nach dem Ausmaß und den Erklärungsfaktoren für das Gefühl ostdeutscher Bürger, mit ihren Interessen durch diese Partei vertreten zu werden, relevant. Der vorliegende Beitrag überprüft die aus der Wahlforschung bekannten Hypothesen für das Gefühl der Vertretenheit durch die PDS. Es zeigt sich, dass neben Einstellungen zur ehemaligen DDR ("DDR-Nostalgie") vor allem ideologische Orientierungen, die Parteiidentifikation mit der PDS sowie die Kompetenzzuschreibung für arbeitsmarktpolitische Fragen eine Rolle spielen.
