Achenes of thirteen native Asteraceae species common to the natural grassland or weeds of the southern region of Brazil were tested for germination over a range of alternating temperatures ( 20/10; 25/15; 30/20 and 35/25ºC), and under constant temperatures ( 20; 25 and 30ºC) with light or not .Only fresh collected achenes (herein = seeds) were used. The optimum temperature for germination differed among the species, with Elephantopus mobillis; Eupatorium
C were used, the higher temperature being in light at a radiating intensity of 40 to 60 µmol.m -2 .s -1 . Only A. gratissima showed positive photoblastic behavior, but higher germination was found at alternating temperatures. Both, C. sylvestris and P. leiocarpa at constant temperatures germinated only at 20 or 25 o C. B. forficata seeds germinated more than 80% from 15°C to 30 O C constant or when one of the shift temperatures was on that range. Scarified seeds of D. viscosa germinated at the same level from 10 o C to 35 o C. S. rhombifolia seeds germinated in higher rates at the constant temperature of 35 o C or the alternating ones that included 35 o C in the treatment. The higher percentage of germination achieved was from 44% in A. gratissima to 97% in B. forficata seeds. Since those are native species about which there are no reports on genetic improvement or landrace selection, the percentages of germination obtained were considered acceptable.
RESUMO -(Germinação de sementes de espécies medicinais do Rio Grande do Sul: Brolllelia allliacantha Bert., Cuphea carthagenensis (Jacq.) Macbride e Talinulll patens (Jacq.)Wi11denow). As espécies estudadas são ervas de expressiva dispersão no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul e com uso difundido na farmacopéia popular. Estudou-se a intluência de diferentes temperaturas constantes (lO, 15 , 20, 25,30 e 35°C) sob condição ·de escuro ou de luz (fotoperíodo: luz/escuro 8h116h) e as temperaturas alternadas (10-20, 15-25, 20-30 e 25-35°C) sobre o comportamento germinativo das sementes. As sementes não germinadas foram submetidas ao teste de tetrazólio. Sementes de B. anliacalllha germinaram acima de 80% nas temperaturas constantes de 25, 30 e 35°C na luz e no escuro. Abaixo de 25°C, as sementes apresentaram dormência relativa. No armazenamento por um ano sob condições ambientais (25°C) e sob refrigeração (5°C), a viabilidade das sementes foi mantida em 90%. Sementes de C. carthagenensis germinaram acima de 80% nas temperaturas alternadas. Em temperaturas constantes, a germinação foi nula, mas as sementes estavam viáveis. Em T. patens constatou-se acima de 50% se sementes deterioradas e a germinabilidade foi semelhante nas temperaturas constantes em relação às alternadas. The intluence of constant temperatures (lOOC; 15°C; 2OOC; 25°C; 300C and 35°C) on the germination of seeds during a photoperiod of 8 hours, was analyzed. Seeds that did not germinate were submitted to the tetrazolium test. Over 80% of the seeds of B. antiacalllha germinated at constant temperatures of 25°, 300 ar 35°C, both in light and darkness. RESUMO:Foram verificadas as condições ambientais de temperatura e de luz para germinação de diásporos de Borreria verticillata, Cayponia martiana, Echinodorus grandiflorus, Ocimum selloi, Plantago australis, Polygonum hydropiperoides e Waltheria douradinha. A germinação foi efetuada em placas de petri usando como substrato agar 1% ou em placas de gerbox com areia, em câmaras BOD, nas temperaturas constantes de 10 e 15ºC na ausência de luz ou nas temperaturas de 20, 25, 30 e 35ºC na ausência ou presença de luz branca. Foram usadas ainda, temperaturas alternantes de 10-20ºC, 15-25ºC, 20-30ºC, 25-35ºC, sendo a temperatura mais alta, de cada par, com presença de luz por 9 horas. B. verticillata, E. grandiflorus e P. australis se mostraram com sementes fotoblásticas positivas, enquanto O. selloi comportou-se como fotoblástica positiva relativa. C. martiana e W. douradinha foram classificadas como afotoblásticas. P. hydropiperoides revelou possuir sementes termo-dependentes de temperaturas variáveis obrigatórias, enquanto nas demais espécies, a germinação em temperaturas variáveis ou constantes teve desempenho similar. Germination was carried out in Petri dishes, using 1% agar as substrate, or in gerbox containing sand, which were placed into BOD chambers at constant temperatures of 10 and 15ºC in the absence of light or at 20, 25, 30 and 35ºC in the absence or presence of white light. Alternate temperatures of 10-20ºC, 15-25ºC, 20-30ºC, 25-35ºC were also tested, as well as the highest temperature in the presence of light during 9 hours/ day. B. verticillata, E. grandiflorus and P. australis showed positive photoblastic seeds, whereas O. selloi seeds behaved as relative positive. C. martiana and W. douradinha seeds were classified as non-photoblastic.
