An audit of womens views was undertaken in an attempt to improve the Downs sydrome screening programme. The findings highlight the key contribution of midwives and indicate womens need for more explanation and information about the test. The audit cycle was completed by a repeat questionnaire to assess the impact of recommendations introduced following the preliminary audit. This showed significant improvements in the levels of satisfaction with the screening programme.
The development of a team approach, headed by a core of personel with coodinators in each unit, to enhance service delivery of the meternal serum screening programme was evaluated after 2 years of operation. Responses were obtained from 17 out of 18 maternity units involved. Whereas coordinators felt this approach was beneficial, the survey did indicate a lack of recognition of their role by other professionals.
