AbsorptionslOsungen. Verbrennungsablauf. Eichenund Auswerten. Gemeinsame Bestimmung von Kohlenstoff und Schwefel aus einer Einwaage. Schwefe/ Koh/enstoff nach der Art des Absorptionsmittels entweder Schwefelsaure oder ein Sulfat gebildet. Damit ist in jedem Falle eine betrachtliche Leitfahigkeitsanderung der Losung verbunden. Die Ergebnisse der ersten Versuche waren jedoch nicht zufriedenstellend. Es stellte sich heraus, daBdas Schwefeldioxyd vom Pumpenol teilweise aufgenommen und dann allmahlich wieder abgegeben wird und dadurch keine einwandfreien Ergebnisse erzielt werden konnten. Urn diese Schwierigkeiten zu umgehen, wurden -im Gegensatz zur Anordnung flir die Kohlenstoffbestimmung (Bild 1a]die Gase zuerst durch die MeBzelle und dann durch das Pumpensystem geleitet (Bild is). Die Abs orp tio nalosung Da das Gas, das bei der Verbrennung von Eisen-und Stahl proben im Sauerstoffstrom entsteht, neben dem Schwefeldioxyd auch stets Kohlendioxyd enthalt, muB grundsatzlich eine Absorptionslosung verwendet werden, in der das Kohlendioxyd nicht geldst wird. Das ist immer der Fall, wenn die Losung eine gewisse Menge Wasserstoffionen enthalt, Der Gehalt an Wasserstoffionen ist anderseits auch flir die Empfindlichkeit des Verfahrens recht bedeutsam, da die Wasserstoffionen zur Leitfiihigkeit der Ausgangslosuug am starksten beitragen und die Leitfahigkeitsanderung, wenn man eine hohe Empfindlichkeit erreichen will, in einem gtinstigen Verhaltnis zur Gesamtleitfahigkeit stehen muB. Die Versuche erbrachten, daB der zur Messung gtinstigste pH-Bereich bei 2,5 bis 3liegt. Beztiglich der Oxydation des Schwefeldioxyds wurde zunachst geprtift, ob nicht schon der hohe SauerstofftiberschuB in den Verbrennungsgasen gentigte, urn in der Losung das Schwefeldioxyd vollig zum Schwefeltrioxyd oder zur Sehwefelsaure aufzuoxydieren. Die Versuche ergaben, daB das nicht der Fall ist. In verdtinnter Sehwefelsaure wird nur ein Teil des Schwefeldioxyds aufoxydiert. Urn es vollstandig zu erfassen, muB man der Absorptionslosung Oxydationsmittel hinzufiigen. Dabei ist neben der dadurch hervorgerufenen unterschiedlichen Leitfahigkeitsanderung wieder zu beachten, daB es nicht zu storenden Nebenreaktionen kommen darf. Eine Mischung von verdtinnter Schwefelsaure und Wasserstoffperoxyd, die meist zur Sehwefelbestimmungs) verwendet wird, scheidet aus, weilsich an den Platinkathoden storende Potentiale ausbilden. Verdtinnte Salpetersaure ist schon geeigneter. Kaliumpermanganat ist ebenfalls brauchbar, hat aber den Nachteil, daB sich im Laufe der Zeit im Gerat Braunstein ausscheidet und die MeBzelle verunreinigt. Zer(IV)-sulfat, das ebenfalls eine schnelle Oxydation des Schwefeldioxyds sichern wurde, scheidet aus, weil es nicht moglieh ist, hiermit eine hinreichend schwach saure Losung herzustellen.
