Die wissenschaftliche Periode der Hirnforschung rechnet noch kaum 60 Jahre. Und doch muB ein jeder, der der Entwicklung dieser Forschung gefolgt ist, einr~umen, dab ihre Fortschritte im VerhKltnis zu der verflossenen Zeit enorm sind. Die Oberfl~che des Gehirns ist nicht mehr, wie Flourens, gestiitzt auf unvollst/~ndige Experimente, behauptete, eine gleichfOrmig gebaute und funktionierende Masse, sondern ~vir kOnnen zur Zeit die Richtigkeit der schon 200 Jahre n. Chr. aufgeworfenen Behauptung des Galen s, und spis der yon dem genialen ,S~hweden S wedenborg (urn 1740) entwickelten Lehre best~tigen, (lag es sowohl in der Rinde, wie im Innern des Gehirns eine weitgehende Arbeitsverteitung gibt. Cartesii philosophische Doktrin, dab der Menschengeist ohne Gehirn denken kann, oder SOmmerings u.a. Behauptung, dal~ die Geistesf~higkeiten im Hirnwasser oder in den Gehirnh6hlen, liegen, ist durch eine detMllierte Analyse dieser FKhigkeiten und ihrer anatomischen Unterlage ersetzt.Zu dieser schSnen Entwicklung der Hirnwissenschaft haben die Anatomie, die Physiologie und die klinisch-anatomische Forschung , wenn auch in nicht ganz gleichem Mage, beigetragen.Die modernen F~rbungsmethoden nachWeigert, Marchi, Nissl, G olgi und Caj a l verschafften uns einen tieferen Einblick in den Bau der Zellen und der Nervenfasern, sowie in den Zusammenhang zwischen den einzelnen Hirn~eilen und damit ihrer Funktionen. Fleehsigs geniale Myelinisationsforschung hat den wunderbaren Aufbau des Gehirns nachgewiesen. Ganz wie man beim Bauen eines Hauses genau folgen kann, wie die eine Balken]age nach der anderen eingelegt wird, ehe die innere feinere Ausriistung angeordnet wird, so kann man mittels diescr Mefhode den Aufbau dieses Organs verfolgen. 1) Vorl~ufige Mitteihmg aus einer ausfiihrlichen Abhandlung.
