Wind is a renewable energy and has many benefit. This energy is used by the salt farmers in the north coast of Java. Windpump is used to convert the wind energy for pumping water from sea to the salt pond. The purpose of this study is to get the performance of salt farmer’s windpump from Demak Region, Central Java for water lifting with vertically reciprocating pump. Rotation of shaft is directly converted to linear translation by crankshaft and connected to the piston pump. This study uses three variations lenght of the crankshaft arm in a piston pump. In 2 up to 5 m/s of wind speed range, the windmills from Demak with arm length of 5.0 cm, 7.5 cm, and 10.0 cm has an average volume flow rate of 0.89 litre/s, 1.8 litre/s, and 1.3 litre/s, respectively. For a day, these variations has a daily average volume of 19,278 litre, 39,162 litre, dan 27,804 litre.
Wind energy is a renewable energy source. Windmill generally used to convert shaft power to electrical power for battery charging. Another benefit of wind energy is wind power for pumping, which usually called windpump. Indonesian salt farmer uses traditional windmill for pumping water for salt production process. The piston lever of the reciprocating pump is directly connected to the windmill shaft. This study will discuss the performance of salt farmer windmills from Demak region with a low-speed centrifugal pump. The variation used in this study is the number of blades on the windmill. There are four blades and two blades. Windmill shaft rotation connected to the AC generator shaft with permanent magnet and then produce electricity. The electric power from the AC generator connected to the DC electric motor, then the DC electric motor rotating the low-speed centrifugal pump. Data required for this study are wind speed, windmill’s shaft speed, and volume flow rate. The results are at wind speed between 2 – 4.5 m/s, a windmill with four blades and two blades has 0.13 liter/s and 0.21 liter/s. The daily average volume for four blades and two blades has 2901.6 liters and 4492.8 liters. The maximum of total efficiency of the windpump system with four and two blades is 34.06% and 37.32%.
Local villagers in the remote area of Wedung, Demak, northern of Central Java, Indonesia utilized special equipment called wind-pump for sea water lifting and circulating on salt production processes. The salt farmer has skill to produce, manufacture and maintain his own traditional wind-pump. In the windpump structure unit consisted of four blades horizontal axis windmill and reciprocating pump. This experiment study separated both windmill and pump by 50 meters. The pump was low speed centrifugal type pump. The windmill shaft was connected electrically to the pump shaft. The electric transmission components were an AC generator, diodes circuits and an DC motor. The experiment is carried out in a place that has the same characteristics as the original place at southern region of Bantul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The variation of experiment was pump head of 55 cm and 85 cm during 6 hours each variation. The average wind speed at the time of data collection at the head of 55 and 85 cm were 3.9 and 3.8 m/s. The volume flow rate and the volume produced by the pump during 6 hours of operation were 0.134 and 0.215 liter/s and 2901.6 and 4640.6 liters.
