Surnrnary:This experiment wa~conducted to determine the possible effects of high level urea and dried beet pulp with molasses in the concentrate ratiom on feed intake, lactation performance, milk efficiency, ruminal pH, rumen fluid and blood volati1c fatty acid concentrations. Four jersey cows were used in a 4 x 4 Latin-square design. Each experimental period was composed of a 30-day transition and 7 -day comparison period.Alfalfa hay was fcd as sole source of roughage and concentrate portion of the rations was consisted of com, starch, wheat bran, dried beet pulp with molasses, urea, bone meal, and mineral and vitamin mixtures. No toxcity signs were observed by the addition of urea to the eoncentrate rations at 5.5 %, 5.0 % and 4.5 % levels. lt also did not decrease the appetite of the eows.Dry matter digestibility was superior for all the rations in comparison with anormal ration digcstibility. There were no significant differences in cellulose digestibility among the rations, a1though their cellulose eontcnts increased from 3.22 % to 7.80 % by inclusion of dried bed pulp with molasses to the rations in place ofstarch. But eellulose digestibilities were found higher for all the rations than for a usual ration which does not eontain urea. Protein digestibility of the ration containing 5.'i % urea differed significantly from the others. Energy digestibility was not effccted by the different levels of urea and stareh-dried beet pulp with molasses in the concentrates. Daily milk production tended to increase by decreasing of starch lcvcl in the rations and by prolonging the experimental period The rations did not show any significant effect on the milk fat, but it decreasedfrom the first to the fourth period. Milk protein, solids-not-fat, lactose and milk efficiency were all similar for the rations.Ruminal pH and concentrations of rumen fluid and blood volati1c fatty acid s were not significantly different. Only, ruminal VFA's and especially propionic acid increased from the beginning toward the end of the experiment.
