Autant que l'âne, auquel il est souvent associé, le dromadaire est l'animal caractéristique du Nord de l'Afrique, donc du monde berbère. Bête de somme, de trait, de course, l'imagerie populaire et touristique n'a surtout retenu de ce chameau à bosse unique, que la dernière qualité : le méhari* touareg animal de selle, élancé, à robe claire qui est particulièrement photogénique surtout lorsqu'il participe à une parade (ilûĝan) ou lorsque, dans les temps révolus, il revenait d'un rezzou victorieux, auréolé autant que son maître du succès de l'entreprise. 2 Le prestige du méhari ne doit pas cependant faire oublier les autres races de dromadaires, plus robustes et, malgré leur inélégance, mieux intégrées dans une économie de production. Ce chameau au poil épais, aux jambes plus courtes et musclées sert aux déplacements des petits nomades du Sahara septentrional lors de l'achaba qui mène hommes et troupeaux dans les champs débarrassés de leurs moissons. Le chameau, souvent seul si le groupe est peu important, est l'élément de transport ; sur son bât sont amassés les flidj-s de la lourde tente, les ustensiles de cuisine, et quelques pauvres provisions. Si les familles entières accompagnent les transhumants, un chameau porteur aura sa silhouette doublée par le bassour, cage recouverte de tissu dans laquelle est préservée l'intimité des femmes et enfants en bas âge. De telles bêtes de somme pouvaient remonter très loin au Nord, dans le Tell : en 1950 il n'était pas extraordinaire de rencontrer dans les plaines littorales proches d'Alger de petits groupes nomades ruinés, encore possesseurs d'un ou deux chameaux et de quelques moutons et chèvres. En Tunisie, le dromadaire est resté un animal familier de la Steppe et du Sahel ; au siècle dernier, il pénétrait même dans le Haut Tell et descendait jusque dans la plaine de la Médjerda. Il n'est pas rare de rencontrer dans les plaines de Tunisie méridionale, dans le pays de Gabès et dans la Djefara un dromadaire attelé à un araire. Au Maroc aussi (voir infra) le dromadaire fréquente les montagnes de l'Atlas autant que les terres sahariennes. Rappelons enfin que, malgré sa légendaire résistance à la mastication, la viande de chameau occupe les étals de toutes les villes sahariennes et de bon nombre de villes du Nord.
