Lupin grain typically provides the main source of protein in most lamb finisher diets in Western Australia. The aim of this work was to determine whether alternative sources of nitrogen could provide a less expensive means of achieving the desired rate of liveweight gain and carcass characteristics. Fifty-one crossbred lambs were finished using 3 different sources of crude protein. These sources were either: (i) a control diet consisting of lupins, oats, barley and cereal chaff in which lupins provided 49% of the nitrogen (lupin diet); (ii) a diet consisting of a combination of cereal grain and urea (urea diet); or (iii) a diet in which lupins were partially replaced with expeller canola meal (canola diet). Diets were isonitrogenous (14.4% crude protein) and isoenergetic (10.5 MJ ME/kg DM). Lambs were gradually introduced to the diets over 2 weeks before being fed the diets ad�libitum for 5 weeks.Lambs fed the canola diet performed the best in terms of feed intake and liveweight gain while those fed the urea diet performed the worst. Respective growth rates for sheep fed the canola, lupin and urea diets were 272, 233 and 180 g/day, respectively, with significant (P<0.05) differences only between the canola and urea diets. Equivalent dry matter intakes for the 3 groups were 1660, 1570 and 1380 g/day respectively, with sheep fed the urea diets being significantly (P<0.05) lower than the other two. Acidosis was considered to be a major cause of the poor performance of sheep fed the urea diet, with 3 sheep from this treatment showing inappetance and markedly reduced growth rates ('shy feeders'). Lambs finished on all 3 diets produced acceptable carcasses. Carcass weights followed the trend of growth rates, but there were no significant differences between diets in carcass weight, dressing percentage, GR tissue depth, C�site fat depth, eye muscle area, muscle pH or meat colour. At the price of the feeds used in this trial, the canola meal diet was the cheapest feed per kilogram of liveweight gain despite being the most costly diet per tonne of feed.
Two hundred and forty sheep of about 15 months of age were used in this experiment to investigate the impact of dentition category on objective and sensory meat quality. The lambs were categorised into 3 dentition classes (category 1, milk teeth; category 2, partial eruption of permanent teeth; and category 3, both permanent teeth fully erupted to the height of the central lateral milk teeth). The study was conducted on 3 farms with flocks representing the 3 genotypes that contribute to the prime lamb industry in Australia: Farm A (Merino × Merino), Farm B (first cross, Border Leicester sire × Merino ewe), and Farm C (second cross, Poll Dorset sire × Border Leicester–Merino ewe). Of the 19 meat quality attributes assessed in sheep from the 3 farms, only 1 attribute in sheep from 1 farm showed a significant deterioration in meat quality as a result of lambs progressing from dentition category 1 to 2. This was an increase in myoglobin content in lambs from Farm B (P<0.05). Many of the attributes assessed showed changes that could be considered as positive for meat quality as the lambs progressed from milk teeth to partially erupted and even to fully erupted teeth. Lambs from dentition category 3 had heavier carcass weights and higher dressing percentages compared with lambs from dentition categories 1 and 2 (P<0.05). The M. longissimus dorsi et lumborum (LD) of lambs from dentition category 3 had a lower surface lightness (L*) value, a higher myoglobin content and a lower cooking loss compared with lambs from dentition categories 1 and 2 (P<0.05). Consumer sensory assessment found the LD from lambs in dentition category 1 to have a lower acceptability score for tenderness compared with the LD from lambs in dentition category 3 (P<0.05) and a lower acceptability score for juiciness, a lower consumer rating and a lower sheep eating quality score compared with the LD from lambs in dentition categories 2 and 3 (P<0.05). The results indicate that for the range of sheep studied, meat from young sheep with partially erupted teeth is unlikely to be inferior in eating quality than the meat currently classified as lamb.
This study investigated the effect of 5 levels of rumen-protected methionine (0, 1, 2, 3, or 5 g/head.day) on growth rate, feed conversion efficiency, carcass composition, and wool growth in lambs fed a production diet ad libitum. Merino and Poll Dorset × Merino (crossbred) wether lambs (120 of each genotype) were housed in group pens each of 6 sheep. After a 1-week adjustment period, all lambs were fed a pelleted diet of lupins, cereal grain, and hay ad libitum. Rumen-protected methionine was added to the diets in the form of Smartamine™-M. The crossbred lambs were slaughtered after 28 days on the treatment diet and the Merino lambs after 42 days.Increasing the level of methionine supplementation did not lead to an increase in growth rate, daily feed intake, feed conversion efficiency, wool growth, skin thickness, or final liveweight and condition score. The Merino lambs had a lower growth rate, thinner skin, faster rate of wool growth, and were less efficient at converting feed into liveweight gain than the crossbred lambs (P < 0.05). There was no interaction between breed and methionine treatment.Increasing the level of methionine treatment also did not improve hot carcass weight, dressing percentage, tissue depth over the rib, longissimus dorsi (LD) cross-sectional area, meat pH, or meat colour. The only beneficial effect of methionine supplementation on carcass attributes was a decline in fat depth over the deepest part of the LD as methionine level increased (P < 0.05).There were no differences in tenderness, juiciness, or flavour intensity between the breeds or as a main effect with methionine supplementation. However, there was an interaction between breed and methionine for flavour intensity, such that methionine supplementation reduced the flavour intensity of Merino meat but not that of the crossbred meat (P < 0.05).This work suggests that there are unlikely to be production gains in terms of liveweight gain, feed conversion efficiency, or wool growth in supplementing lambs with protected methionine if they are being fed a high performance diet ad libitum. However, there were 2 benefits that may have scope for further investigation. The first was a reduction in fat cover over the loin as the level of methionine supplementation increased. The second was a reduction in the intensity of flavour found in Merino lamb when the lambs were supplemented with methionine. The study also provided some useful guidelines for the differences in growth and carcass characteristics between Merino and crossbred lambs when they are finished under identical conditions to an even fat cover, and demonstrated that Merino lambs can produce carcasses of very acceptable eating quality when well finished.
Hintergrund: Seit 2014 ist Psychotherapie bei psychotischen Störungen uneingeschränkt indiziert. Patienten mit psychotischen Störungen erhalten jedoch weiterhin selten eine ambulante Psychotherapie. Unklar ist, ob eine höhere Ablehnungsquote durch ambulante Psychotherapeuten dazu beiträgt. In einem Feldexperiment prüften wir, ob Patienten mit psychotischen Störungen auf Therapieplatzsuche häufiger von Therapeuten abgelehnt werden als andere Patientengruppen. Methode: Die Experimentatorin kontaktierte niedergelassene Psychotherapeuten mit dem Schwerpunkt «Verhaltenstherapie» (N = 60) und gab sich entweder als Patientin mit Schizophrenie oder als Patientin mit Depression aus. Wir erfassten die Zu- oder Absage der Therapeuten zu einem Erstgespräch, die voraussichtliche Wartezeit und Vorerfahrungen mit Schizophrenie sowie erwartete Herausforderungen bei der Schizophreniebehandlung. Ergebnisse: Dabei zeigten sich keine statistisch signifikanten Unterschiede hinsichtlich der Zusagen zu einem Erstgespräch (Schizophrenie: 60%; Depression: 53%) und der durchschnittlichen Wartezeit (Schizophrenie: M = 1,6 Monate; Depression: M = 0,8 Monate). Therapeuten, die im Nachgespräch angaben, grundsätzlich keine Patienten mit Schizophrenie zu behandeln, beklagten häufiger das Fehlen spezialisierter Supervisionsangebote und waren eher der Ansicht, Patienten mit psychotischen Störungen seien unzureichend zu rationalem Denken befähigt. Schlussfolgerung: Patienten mit psychotischen Störungen scheinen auf Therapieplatzsuche ebenso häufig ein Erstgesprächsangebot zu erhalten wie andere Patientengruppen. Mögliche Unterschiede in der Wartezeit sollten mit größeren Stichproben getestet werden. Eine spezialisierte Weiterbildung und Supervision könnten das Engagement in der Versorgung dieser Patientengruppe steigern.
