The combined effects of surface roughness and the couple stresses on the static and dynamic characteristics of squeeze film lubrication in porous journal bearings with no journal rotation are theoretically studied. The Stokes couple stress fluid model is considered to model the lubricants with additives. The surface roughness on the porous journal bearing is mathematically modelled by a random variable with non-zero mean, variance and skewness. The generalised stochastic Reynolds type equation is derived for the problem under consideration. The applied load is considered as a sinusoidal function of time to simulate the bearings operating under cyclic loads. The closed form expressions for the bearing characteristics are obtained for the short porous journal bearings. It is observed that the negatively skewed surface roughness and couple stresses improve the performance of the porous journal bearings as compared to the smooth journal bearings with Newtonian lubricants. However, the presence of positively skewed surface roughness on the bearing surface affects its performance.
In this paper, the general dynamic Reynolds equation of sliding-squeezing surfaces of exponential shaped slider bearings with micropolar fluid is solved numerically for the assessment of dynamic characteristics. The two Reynolds type equations governing the steady performance and the perturbed characteristics are obtained using the perturbation technique and are solved numerically using the finite difference method. The results are compared with that of the inclined plane slider bearing. It is found that the exponential shaped slider bearing lubricated with micropolar fluids results in higher steady state film pressure, load carrying capacity and better dynamic stiffness and damping characteristics.
Purpose
This paper aims to present a detailed analysis to explore the various properties of non-Newtonian couple stress lubricants between parallel porous plates.
Design/methodology/approach
With reference to the theories based on micro-continuum analysis, a non-linear, non-Newtonian Reynolds type equation is arrived. The closed form solutions obtained clearly indicate the changes in pressure, load bearing capacity and response time because of variation in viscosity of couple stress fluid.
Findings
It is observed that the viscosity variation factor greatly influences the change in pressure, load carrying capacity and squeezing time.
Originality/value
It is observed that the nature of lubricants with suitable additives greatly helps in overcoming the adverse effect because of porous surface. Reynolds type equation is analysed using appropriate boundary conditions. The expression for pressure distribution arrived at in turn leads to the analysis of load bearing capacity and response time.
