Summary. Arterial oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions, pH, and haemoglobin concentrations, were determined in 50 Nigerian patients with abnormal haemoglobins SS, SC or CC who were not in crisis. As control subjects, 50 healthy Nigerians awaiting minor surgical procedures were also studied along the same lines. The values obtained for Pa,CO2 and pH in the two groups were similar. The values obtained for Pa,O2 in the abnormal haemoglobin group were significantly lower than in the control group (P<0.001). In the control group, the values obtained for the Pa,O2 showed correlation with age, whereas in the abnormal haemoglobin group there was no correlation with age. The haemoglobin concentration was found to be significantly lower in the abnormal haemoglobin group than in the control group (P<0.001).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
