This paper deals with refined beam, plate, and shell theories which are based on the reduction of the three-dimensional elasticity theory by assuming an approximation of the displacements through the thickness. Conditions which should be imposed on this approximation to provide the consistency of the theory are obtained. For brevity's sake the derivation is performed for a beam, the results being further generalized for plates and shells. A thick isotropic plate is considered as an example.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
