AlternAtives for the use of anomalocardia flexuosa (linnAeus, 1767) shells As AggregAte to the production of green bricks in the renAscer community, municipAlity of cAbedelo, pArAíbA stAte, brAzil AbstrAct -The processing of the bivalve Anomalocardia flexuosa in the Renascer fisher community (Cabedelo, Paraíba State, Brazil), along the banks of the Paraíba River, generates an improper disposal of shells which has caused silting and water quality degradation. This study aimed to evaluate the environmental and economic feasibility of aggregating value tothe shells disposed in the studied community. Bricks were made with 30, 50 and 60% of shells using a mortar with clay and Portland cement. Resistance, water absorption and mass loss by immersion tests were performed to verify that the bricks meet the standards established by the ABNT 6136 for the use in civil construction. The three types of bricks evaluated here met the ABNT standards. Economic analysis showed that the production of green bricks can be an alternative source of income for the community. It can be concluded that the use of shells as substrate to make bricks is within the following concepts: 1) reverse logistics, considering the potential of use of this residue; 2) environmental sustainability, because it minimizes silting and water pollution; 3) social sustainability since it is an alternative to improve
Urbanization causes a significant increase in the consumption of building materials, with negative environmental effects. Thus, it is a priority to develop alternative applications that promote infrastructure progress and reduction in the environmental impacts derived from civil construction activities. One example is microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP), a process by which ureolytic bacteria, such as Sporosarcina pasteurii, induce calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation by urea hydrolysis. The shells are a by-product that has great potential for various uses and applications in industry. In the search for a more sustainable process, this study seeks to evaluate CaCO3 - shell powder as an aggregate to replace Portland cement with bio cement synthesized by S. pasteurii. Based on the autonomous mini-controlled irrigation system, was possible to maintain S. pasteurii activity that aggregates the particles via a biomineralization process.
