Based on personal 'participant observation' of interdisciplinary dynamics since the early 1960s, this chapter offers some insights and a few suggestions for conducting interdiscplinary research in agriculture and development. It begins by looking back on the author's own experiences as one of the first anthropologists to work in the CGIAR. It analyses these experiences within the social context of the centre's different disciplines and compares these experiences to similar efforts to incorporate social science into agricultural research projects in a large US land-grant university. Finally, the chapter points to possible institutional innovations useful for crafting new perspectives on improving communication between those who deal with the "agri" and those who deal with the "culture" of agriculture.
