On a étudié le transfert de masse et le traitement biologique à action curative de naphtalène, méthylenaphtalène-2 et diméthylnaphtalène-1,5 dans un bioréacteur rotatif modifi é avec ajout de chicanes et de billes. Les taux de transfert de masse de ces particules organiques de faible solubilité qui se dissolvent dans l'eau (en se basant sur le volume de travail du bioréacteur) sont plus élevées dans le bioréacteur qui incorporent les billes et les chicanes, le coeffi cient de transfert de masse global (KLa) atteignant jusqu'à 25 h-1. D'après sa capacité à contenir le plus grand volume de milieux pollués, le bioreacteur à chicanes est considéré comme la conception de bioréacteur à rouleaux optimum. Avec Pseudomonas putida, le taux de traitement biologique à action curative du naphatlène atteint 61 mg/l-h dans le réacteur et en utilisant des substrats mélangés, le taux de traitement biologique à action curative du méthylnaphtalène-2 atteint 30 mg/l-h. Les vitesses de dissolution pour les particules hydrophobes dans les milieux de culture durant le procédé de traitement biologique à action curative sont jusqu'à quatre fois plus élevées que les vitesses de transfert de masse dans les contrôles abiotiques, ce qui est probablement dû à la production de biosurfactants par P. putida.
