Abstract. Super-elastic collision is an abnormal collisional process, in which some particular mechanisms cause the kinetic energy of the system increasing. Most studies in this aspect focus on solid-like objects, but they rarely consider gases or liquids, as the collision of the latter is primarily a mixing process. With cross-field diffusion being effectively prohibited, magnetized plasmoids are different from ordinary gases. But it remains unclear how they act during a collision. Here we present the global picture of a unique collision between two coronal mass ejections in the heliosphere, which are the largest magnetized plasmoids erupting from the Sun. Our analysis for the first time reveals that these two magnetized plasmoids collided like solid-like objects with a 73% likelihood of being super-elastic. Their total kinetic energy surprisingly increased by about 6.6% through the collision, which significantly influenced the dynamics of the plasmoids.

Substituent interaction energy (SIE) was defined as the energy change of the isodesmic reaction X-spacer-Y + H-spacer-H --> X-spacer-H + H-spacer-Y. It was found that this SIE followed a simple equation, SIE(X,Y) = -ksigma(X)sigma(Y), where k was a constant dependent on the system and sigma was a certain scale of electronic substituent constant. It was demonstrated that the equation was applicable to disubstituted bicyclo[2.2.2]octanes, benzenes, ethylenes, butadienes, and hexatrienes. It was also demonstrated that Hammett's equation was a derivative form of the above equation. Furthermore, it was found that when spacer = nil the above equation was mathematically the same as Pauling's electronegativity equation. Thus it was shown that Hammett's equation was a derivative form of the generalized Pauling's electronegativity equation and that a generalized Pauling's electronegativity equation could be utilized for diverse X-spacer-Y systems. In addition, the total electronic substituent effects were successfully separated into field/inductive and resonance effects in the equation SIE(X,Y) = -k(1)F(X)F(Y) - k(2)R(X)R(Y) - k(3)(F(X)R(Y) + R(X)F(Y)). The existence of the cross term (i.e., F(X)R(Y) and R(X)F(Y)) suggested that the field/inductive effect was not orthogonal to the resonance effect because the field/inductive effect from one substituent interacted with the resonance effect from the other. Further studies on multi-substituted systems suggested that the electronic substituent effects should be pairwise and additive. Hence, the SIE in a multi-substituted system could be described using the equation SIE(X1, X2, ..., Xn) = Sigma(n-1)(i=1)Sigma(n)(j=i+1)k(ij)sigma(X)isigma(X)j.

A novel fiber-optic-based method for simultaneous time- and wavelength-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy for the rapid diagnosis of diseased tissue is demonstrated. By combining multiple bandpass and dichroic filters (405/40, 460/50, and 550/50) with different lengths of optical fiber (1, 10, and 19 m) acting as an optical delay this system enables the near real-time acquisition and characterization of time-resolved fluorescence spectra using a single detector and excitation input. The recording of multiple fluorescence response pulses at selected wavelengths can be completed in hundreds of nanoseconds, which provides the capability of a real-time characterization of biological systems.

A granular clock is observed in a vertically vibrated compartmentalized granular gas composed of two types of grains with the same size. The dynamics of the clock is studied in terms of an unstable evaporation or condensation model for the granular gas. In this model, the temperatures of the two types of grains are considered to be different, and they are functions of the composition of the gas. Oscillations in the system are driven by the asymmetric collisions properties between the two types of grains. Both our experiments and model show that the transition of the system from a homogeneous state to an oscillatory state is via a Hopf bifurcation.
