The current first-line mucosal leishmaniasis therapy shows an adequate cure but later recurrence. HIV infection and systemic arterial hypertension should be investigated before start the treatment of mucosal leishmaniasis. Work-related laryngopathy may have negative consequences for voice professionals. Aim. To analyze the profile of voice professionals seen in a tertiary level hospital. Study design: a longitudinal historical cohort. Methods. A retrospective analysis of patient files. Diagnosis was reached using videostroboscopy. Results. 163 patients (119 females and 44 males) were seen. The mean age was 36.5 years. Professionals included spoken voice users (salesman, teachers, telemarketers, receptionists, health professionals) and singers. The most frequent diagnoses were: minor structural changes (33%), nodules (22%), Reinke's edema (10%), and polyps (6%). A correlation was observed between smoking, age and gender; there was an association between smoking and Reinke's edema, leucoplasia and tabagism, females and Reinke's edema, nodules and minor structural changes, and also between patients aged over 40 years and Reinke's edema, and patients under 40 with nodules, laryngitis, and minor structural changes. Symptoms lasted more than 6 months in 74% of patients. Conclusion. The profile of voice professionals seen in a tertiary hospital included spoken voice patients and singers. In our study minor structural changes predominated, followed by nodules, Reinke edema and polyps.

Introduction: We are facing a pandemic with a great impact worldwide, as a result of the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus . The medical community is still getting to know behavior of this virus and the consequences from a population point of view. All this knowledge is extremely dynamic, so some behaviors are still not well established. Otorhinolaryngologists have a central role in the management of this situation, in which they must assess the patient, avoid contamination to and by health professionals and other patients. Thus, the recommendations of the Brazilian Association of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervical-Facial Surgery (ABORL-CCF) have the main objective of reducing the spread of the new coronavirus during otorhinolaryngological care and assisting in the management of these patients. Methods: Review of the main recommendations of national and international scientific societies, decisions by government agencies and class councils. The topics will be related to the general aspects of COVID-19, personal protective equipment, care in patient assistance, endoscopic exam routines and the management of sinonasal, otological and pediatric evaluations related to COVID-19.Lavinsky J et al. Results:The use of personal protective equipment is considered crucial in routine ENT care. We recommend postponing appointments, exams and elective surgeries to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Similarly, we recommend changing routines in several areas of otolaryngology. Additionally, guidance is provided on the use of telemedicine resources during the pandemic period. Conclusions:We are still at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and scientific evidence is still scarce and incomplete, so these ABORL-CCF recommendations for otorhinolaryngologists may be updated based on new knowledge and the pattern of the new coronavirus spread. We found more male vocal process granuloma, except when associated with laryngeal intubation. The most frequent related etiopathogenic factor was laryngeal-pharynx reflux, followed by laryngeal intubation and vocal abuse. Clinical management with proton-pump inhibitor (PPI), topical inhalant steroid and phonotherapy was enough for remission on 48.6% of the patients. Surgery for removal of the granuloma associated with clinical management was effective in 90% of the events. Later recurrences (more than one year) were noticed in five patients, suggesting that associated etiopathogenic factors should be held for a long time.

Steroids may be considered an important therapeutic option in the management of many diseases, specially the inflammatory ones, associated with vocal changes.
