L’intensification des relations avec les Etats-Unis au cours du XX e siècle, notamment à partir de la seconde guerre mondiale, eut des conséquences profondes sur les futurs modèles de développement du Brésil. De ce point de vue, la mission Cooke de 1942 marqua un tournant décisif en ouvrant la voie à l’industrialisation du pays. Il en alla de même de la mission Abbink (1947-1949), qui proposait un modèle de développement libéral. Mais le Plan Marshall, en ouvrant de nouvelles occasions d’investissement aux firmes américaines, retarda l’intégration dans le système économique capitaliste, jusqu’en 1956, où les Européens eux-mêmes, en particulier les Allemands, recommencèrent à s’intéresser au Brésil.
