Golden shiners (Notemigonus crysoleucas) require a dietary source of ascorbic acid (AA) for growth or survival, depending on diet composition. However, no quantitative requirements of golden shiners for AA for growth, health or survival have been determined, and specific deficiency signs have not been observed. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different dietary levels of AA on the growth and health of golden shiners fed diets containing 0-218.5 mg AA/kg diet for 10-16 wk. Weight gain, survival and gross deformities were assessed at 10 wk. The remaining fish were fed the same diets from wk 11-16; hematology and alternative complement activity were then assessed and a subset of live fish from each tank was exposed to elevated temperature. Gross deformities appeared in fish fed 0 mg AA/kg diet at 9 wk. The 19.5 mg AA/kg diet was sufficient to prevent the deformities and optimize survival, whereas growth did not differ among treatments. Fish fed 40.3 mg of AA/kg diet had a higher survival rate than fish fed 0 or 19.5 mg AA/kg diet after exposure to elevated temperatures (34-35.5 degrees C). Alternative complement activity and visceral AA concentrations were greater in fish fed diets with 218.5 mg AA/kg than in all other groups. The results indicate that the dietary requirement of AA for golden shiners increases in response to heat stress, and that the alternative complement activity (one index of immune competence) was strongly enhanced in fish fed a diet with approximately 10 times the amount of AA required to prevent deficiency signs.

To facilitate economical culture of black pacu, Colossoma macropomum, and red pacu, Piaractus brachypomus, in the Amazon region of South America, we assessed locally available alternative energy sources for practical diets. We tested the effects of control diets (containing wheat products) versus diets with different Amazonian feedstuffs (yucca, Manihot sculenta, plantain, Musa paradisiaca, or pijuayo, Bactris gasipaes) on the performance of the pacus in three feeding trials. Black pacu (22.5 6 0.03 g; Trial 1) or red pacu (2.56 6 0.01 g; Trial 2) were fed diets containing 30% wheat bran (control) or cooked or uncooked yucca, plantain, or pijuayo for 12 wk. In Trial 3, larger black pacu (86.9 6 6.4 g) were grown to market size in 24 wk on similar diets. Weight gain, feed conversion, survival, alternative complement activity, and lysozyme were similar among diets. Hepatosomatic index, liver glycogen, and dry matter were affected by diet in Trials 1 and 2, but effects were not consistent among trials. In Trial 3, protein efficiency ratio was lower in fish fed the diet containing wheat middlings. However, relative to wheat bran or wheat middlings, all feedstuffs tested were effective energy sources for juvenile black pacu and red pacu.

As the most popular baitfish in the USA, the golden shiner is subjected to frequent handling and transportation episodes prior to retail marketing and recreational use. Considerable mortality and economic loss can occur during handling and transportation. Limited information is available concerning stress responses, such as cortisol secretion, and mobilization of nutrients, such as zinc and ascorbic acid, during handling and transportation of this fish species. Therefore, two concurrent experiments were performed to characterize cortisol responses, as well as changes in whole‐body zinc and visceral ascorbic acid concentrations, after harvesting, grading, and transporting by ground or air. During ground transportation, fish were sampled immediately after being subjected to the following conditions: seined from a commercial pond in Lonoke, Arkansas (I), released into vats from the loading truck (II), graded by bar grader (III), loaded onto a hauling truck (IV) and after transport for 10 h to Brenham, Texas (V). Fish were also sampled before and after air freight shipment. Whole‐body cortisol appeared to be a reliable endocrine marker for stress response of golden shiner subjected to handling and transportation. Grading by bar grader was the most stressful event in the process of handling and transporting golden shiners, resulting in a significantly elevated whole‐body cortisol concentration of 107 ng/g tissue, compared to concentrations of 6.3, 32.3, 15.7, and 30.4 ng/g tissue, for stages I, II, IV, and V, respectively. A significant increase in whole‐body cortisol concentration was also observed after air transportation of 22 h duration. No significant reductions in whole‐body zinc or visceral ascorbic acid concentrations were observed.

A feeding trial was conducted to determine growth, survival, feed utilization, nonspecific immune response, and proximate and fatty acid composition of the fillet of stocker-sized channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus reared at temperatures considered slightly below optimal (228C), optimal (278C), or slightly above optimal (328C) for feed intake and growth of this species. Groups of 100 stockers initially averaging 111.4 6 1.7 g (mean 6 SE) were stocked into each of four 1,140-L tanks within each of three independent recirculating systems and were fed a 32% protein commercial floating pellet once daily to satiation for 14 weeks. Feed intake was calculated weekly. Subsamples of fish were weighed every 3 weeks to track growth. At the end of the trial, all fish were counted and weighed. Five fish per tank were bled to analyze hematology and immunological parameters. Analysis of variance and Fisher's least-significantdifference tests were used to compare differences among treatment means (P 0.05). Weight gain (252.2 6 20.0 g) was highest and feed conversion ratio (1.3 6 0.0) was lowest in fish held at 278C, while survival (99 6 0.4%) was highest in fish held at 328C. Feed intake did not differ by temperature. When differences in final body weight were considered, the protein, dry matter, and ash in the fillet did not differ by temperature. Both temperature and final body weight affected fillet lipid. Fish reared at 328C were smaller but had more fillet lipid than fish reared at 278C. Hepatosomatic index did not differ by temperature. Monounsaturates in muscle lipid declined with temperature, while total n-6 highly unsaturated fatty acids and the index of fatty acid unsaturation were higher in fish held at 228C than in those held at 328C. Alternative complement activity was highest in fish held at 228C, while lysozyme activity was highest at 328C. Temperature had numerous effects on fish performance when diet was fixed. These effects must be considered when diet composition is manipulated to enhance channel catfish performance at different temperatures.
