Rousseau no solo ha sido considerado como una de las figuras más representativas de la filosofía ilustrada, también se lo reconoce por ser pionero del romanticismo a causa de sus exhaustivas indagaciones en la subjetividad, con las que da cuenta de la relación entre lo afectivo e intelectivo. La indagación sobre la relación entre lo afectivo y la política ha sido un nicho prolífero de investigación en los estudios sobre Rousseau, en particular lo referente al análisis en torno al amor propio, el amor de sí y la compasión. A partir de esta grilla investigativa, este artículo indaga en la obra de Rousseau las raíces subjetivas de la afectividad humana y cómo estas sirven de guía para poder elucidar la sanción social como un mecanismo afectivo/intelectivo. Finalmente, se postula que el proyecto autónomo consiste en la apropiación y el uso deliberado de tales mecanismos.
