The authors postulate that the OAG and oral hygiene care regimen may be clinically useful in improving oral assessment and hygiene in children with cancer during and after chemotherapy, thus decreasing associated infection and enhancing patient comfort.
AB STRACT:The pur pose of this study was to in ves ti gate how pre ma ture in fants' ox y gen sat u ra tion changed in re sponse to mu sic ther apy while they were re ceiv ing endotracheal suctioning. A con ve nience sam ple of 30 pre ma ture in fants was se lected from three neo na tal in ten sive care units. A one-group re peated mea sures de sign was adopted for this study. The ox y gen sat u ra tion of all sub jects was first mea sured while they were re ceiv ing endotracheal suctioning dur ing a four-hour con trol pe riod with reg u lar care. Then, four hours af ter the con trol pe riod was com pleted, an ex per i men tal pe riod be gan in which the mu sic "Tran si tions" was played. One min ute be fore suctioning, the level of ox y gen sat u ra t ion was mea sured to pro vide the base line data. Dur ing a pe riod of 30 min utes af ter suctioning, the ox y gen sat u ra tion was re corded ev ery min ute to an a lyze the clin i cal ef fects of mu sic ther apy. The re sults showed that pre ma ture in fants re ceiv ing mu sic ther apy with endotracheal suctioning had a sig nif i cantly higher SPO 2 than that when not re ceiv ing mu sic ther apy (p < .01), and the level of ox y gen sat u ra tion re turned to the base line level faster than when they did not re ceive mu sic ther a py (p < .01). Ac cord ingly, it is hoped that giv ing ap pro pri ate mu sic ther apy as de vel op men tal care to pre ma ture in fants when per form ing any nurs ing in ter ven tion may en hance not only the qual ity of nurs ing care but also qual ity of the in fant's life.Key Words: mu sic ther apy, ox y gen sat u ra tion, pre ma ture in fant, endotracheal suctioning.
