Résumé Depuis la fin des années 1960, la question du handicap a souvent été abordée comme un état qui touche avant tout un individu atteint d’une déficience. L’évolution de la pensée du handicap met en évidence d’une part, la responsabilité inhérente au système d’organisation sociale concernant la réduction des situations de handicap, et d’autre part le rôle des acteurs sociaux handicapés et non handicapés dans l’interrelation pour transformer les rapports sociaux. Le handicap ne serait plus dans la nature des hommes, déterminé par des données génétiques, physiologiques, physiques, mais dans la culture, c’est-à-dire dans le rapport que les individus entretiennent consciemment ou non avec l’environnement social. Le processus d’intégration qui est ici interrogé et auquel est confrontée la personne en situation de handicap, trop souvent encore, discriminée ou exclue, est un processus dialectique qui prend forme dans la rencontre, la confrontation d’histoires singulières d’individus que rien ne rapproche. Accepter, connaître et reconnaître l’Autre hors de regards biaisés par des préjugés ou de représentations négatives sont alors les étapes qui fondent « le vivre-ensemble ».
Résumé Il n’y a peut-être jamais eu autant d’ouvrages sur le bonheur qu’aujourd’hui, préfigurant une société en mal de vivre. Dans ce contexte, la figure du handicap vient nous rappeler la difficulté de penser « l’être ensemble », de vivre la différence dans la pensée de l’universel. Le droit au bonheur ne peut nous faire oublier que le handicap et son cortège de dépendances sont porteurs de limites qui peuvent être autant de freins à vivre « le bonheur en acte ». Cependant, le bonheur n’est pas à rechercher dans un modèle d’existence prédéfini, mais dans ce qui fait l’originalité, la singularité de la vie au quotidien de chacun de nous. Aussi la confrontation au handicap est une gifle au silence d’une vie qui ne reconnaît pas le bonheur de vivre et, comme le dit Comte-Sponville citant Flaubert : « Que ce mot de bonheur a fait couler de larmes, sans lui on vivrait plus tranquille ! »
