Abstract. C-tnetaphase karyotypes from bone-marrow cells from 117 individuals representing 24 populations of the pocket gopher, Thomomys hottae (Uvnorx and Gervais), were studied. The geographic range of the populations sampled was California, Arizona, New Mexico and the Mexican states of Sonora and Sinaloa. No evidence of intrapopulation variation was recorded, but extensive inter population variation in chromosome complement was observed. All individuals, excepting one, had a diploid number of 76, so that variation rested in the relativenumbers of each morphological type of chromosome in the respective comple ments. Existing evidence suggests interfertility between adjacent populations despite degrees of karyotypic disparity.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
