The program has also led to the development of a core group of 64 family therapy trainers. There has been an associated delivery of more family-oriented mental health services throughout the Commonwealth.
This article suggests that many traditional pre-doctoral psychology internships inadequately prepare trainees for the prospective practice of psychology in the era of managed mental health care. Graduate training programs need to integrate clinical work in a managed care setting during internship training utilizing the scientistpractitioner model to: (a) more effectively prepare trainees for future work in managed care; (b) expand professional psychology's unique contributions to mental health treatment; and (c) apply the research methodology of psychology to evaluate clinical efficacy and treatment outcomes within the managed care environment. The widespread emergence of alternative models of mental health care systems has affected the delivery of psychological services. With the proliferation of health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and other managed competition systems, it is likely that the majority of mental health patients will receive treatment under some type of a managed care plan before the end of this century (Berkman, Bassos, & Post, 1988). This "mental health care revolution" (Zimet, 1989
20 clinical graduate students were asked to rate initial interviews of a single client using Kirtner and Cartwright's scale for predicting length and outcome of therapy. Both audio and video methods of presenting the interviews were used. Kirtner and Cartwright's finding that particular scale items discriminated among clients was partially supported. The lack of over-all significant findings did not allow for a comparison of audio and video methods of presentation.
