A compilation of paleoclimate records from lake sediments, trees, glaciers, and marine sediments provides a view of circum-Arctic environmental variability over the last 400 years. From 1840 to the mid-20th century, the Arctic warmed to the highest temperatures in four centuries. This warming ended the Little Ice Age in the Arctic and has caused retreats of glaciers, melting of permafrost and sea ice, and alteration of terrestrial and lake ecosystems. Although warming, particularly after 1920, was likely caused by increases in atmospheric trace gases, the initiation of the warming in the mid-19th century suggests that increased solar irradiance, decreased volcanic activity, and feedbacks internal to the climate system played roles.

Hydrologically sensitive tree‐ring chronologies from Pinus flexilis in California and Alberta were used to produce an AD 993–1996 reconstruction of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and to assess long‐term variability in the PDO's strength and periodicity. The reconstruction indicates that a ∼50 to 70 year periodicity in the PDO is typical for the past 200 years but, was only intermittently a strong mode of variability prior to that. Between AD 1600 and 1800 there is a general absence of significant variability within the 50 to 100 year frequency range. Significant variability within in the frequency range of 50 to 100 years reemerges between AD 1500 and 1300 and AD 1200 to 1000. A prolonged period of strongly negative PDO values between AD 993 and 1300 is contemporaneous with a severe medieval megadrought that is apparent in many proxy hydrologic records for the western United States and Canada.

Information regarding long term hydrological variability is critical for the effective management of surface water resources. In the Canadian Prairie region, growing dependence on major river systems for irrigation and other consumptive uses has resulted in an increasing vulnerability to hydrological drought and growing interprovincial tension. This study presents the first dendrochronological records of streamflow for Canadian Prairie rivers. We present 1,113‐year, 522‐year, and 325‐year reconstructions of total water year (October to September) streamflow for the North Saskatchewan, South Saskatchewan, and Saskatchewan Rivers, respectively. The reconstructions indicate relatively high flows during the 20th Century and provide evidence of past prolonged droughts. Low flows during the 1840s correspond with aridity that extended over much of the western United States. Similarly, an exceptional period of prolonged low flow conditions, approximately 900 A.D. to 1300 A.D., is coincident with evidence of sustained drought across central and western North America. The 16th Century megadrought of the western United States and Mexico, however, does not appear to have had a major impact on the Canadian rivers. The dendrohydrological records illustrate the risks involved if future water policy and infrastructure development in the Canadian Prairies are based solely on records of streamflow variability over the historical record.

Tree-ring chronologies from living and sub-fossil Pinus flexilis James (limber pine) trees extend back more than 500 yr on the western edge of the Great Plains in Alberta. Living trees were found to be as old as 526 yr. Tree-ring growth in Pinus flexilis is most sensitive to annual precipitation over the annualization period August to July. The longevity of the trees coupled with their sensitivity to variations in annual precipitation make them an important resource for constructing annually resolved multicentury records of paleohydrology on the northwestern Great Plains. A 487-yr reconstruction of annual precipitation in southwestern Alberta was produced from the tree-ring series. This is the longest dendroclimatological reconstruction of precipitation available from the northern plains. The reconstruction has some similarity to reconstructions from the western Great Plains of the United States. However, there are also many divergences in the timing of droughts. Some of this divergence may reflect the importance of orographic uplift in producing precipitation along the eastern flanks of the Rocky Mountains. Our reconstruction shows that the frequency of droughts in Alberta during the period of instrumental records, about the last 100 yr, has not been appreciably different from conditions of the preceding four centuries. In addition, the most severe drought of this century, which led to widespread farm abandonment between 1918 and 1922, was not the most severe drought in the past 487 yr.
