The essential oils of the different parts of Lavandula dentata L. (inflorescences and aerial part without inflorescences) collected in the city of Uberaba (minas Gerais State)were obtained by hydro distillation, and their chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and compared to the chemical composition of essential oil of Lavandula hybrida and Lavandula officinalis. It was observed that the essential oils of the studied species have varied chemical composition and are composed mainly of monoterpenes. The essential oils of L. hybrida and L. officinalis showed a higher concentration of linalool and linaline acetate, while L. dentata L. presented higher concentration of fenchone, eucalyptol and camphor. Results indicate that the essential oil composition of L. dentata L. grown in Uberaba is similar to those produced in Curitiba - PR, providing a promising perspective for the cultivation and extraction of essential oils of this species in Minas Gerais.

The molecular structure of human uropepsin, an aspartic proteinase from the urine produced in the form of pepsinogen A in the gastric mucosa, has been determined by molecular replacement using human pepsin as the search model. Crystals belong to space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 50.99, b = 75.56, c = 89.90 A. Crystallographic refinement led to an R factor of 0.161 at 2.45 A resolution. The positions of 2437 non-H protein atoms in 326 residues have been determined and the model contains 143 water molecules. The structure is bilobal, consisting of two predominantly beta-sheet lobes which, as observed in other aspartic proteinases, are related by a pseudo-twofold axis. A model of the uropepsin-pepstatin complex has been constructed based on the high-resolution crystal structure of pepsin complexed with pepstatin.

Human tissue kallikreins (KLKs) are a group of serine proteases found in many tissues and biological fluids and are differentially expressed in several specific pathologies. Here, we present evidences of the ability of these enzymes to activate plasminogen. Kallikreins 3 and 5 were able to induce plasmin activity after hydrolyzing plasminogen, and we also verified that plasminogen activation was potentiated in the presence of glycosaminoglycans compared with plasminogen activation by tPA. This finding can shed new light on the plasminogen/plasmin system and its involvement in tumor metastasis, in which kallikreins appear to be upregulated.

RESUMOMucopolissacaridose do tipo VI é uma doença de armazenamento lisossômico causada pela deficiência da enzima arilsulfatase B (ASB), de herança autossômica recessiva. Apresentamos os aspectos endócrinos de 3 casos: o primeiro foi diagnosticado numa menina de 6 anos e os outros em dois irmãos, um menino de 4,1 anos e uma menina de 2,9 anos. Nas 3 crianças observaram-se peso e altura normais ao nascimento, fenótipo compatível com mucopolissacaridose a partir dos 2 anos, associado a baixa estatura, sem retardo mental e com glicosaminoglicanos elevados na urina. O hGH estimulado pela clonidina (0,1mg/m 2 ) apresentou picos de 6,2, 5,6 e 4,6ng/ml nos casos 1, 2 e 3. Valores estímulados pela hipoglicemia foram de 30,3, 8,8 e 8,2ng/ml, respectivamente. IGF1 e IGFBP3 feitos nos casos 2 e 3 foram normais. Nos 3 casos, TSH, T 4 livre e anticorpos antitireoidianos foram normais, bem como cálcio e fósforo. Durante o seguimento do caso 2 foi detectada insuficiência adrenal secundária prontamente tratada. A idade óssea foi atrasada e a sela túrcica alargada ao RX de crânio. Ressonância magnética feita nos casos 2 e 3 revelou sela vazia. Como em outros nanismos dismórficos, não encontramos deficiências hormonais que pudessem justificar a baixa estatura. Mucopolysaccharidosis VI is a lisosomal storage disorder caused by deficiency of arylsulfatase B (ASB), inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. We investigated 3 such cases: the first was diagnosed in a 6-year old girl and the other two, a girl and boy siblings, were 2.9 and 4.1y, respectively. The children were normal at birth and the onset of clinical manifestations began at the age of 2y, associated with growth deficiency without mental deterioration. They were screened for inborn errors of metabolism and increased urinary levels of glycosaminoglycans were detected. A clonidine stimulation (0.1mg/m 2 ) for hGH gave peak levels of 6.2, 5.6 and 4.6ng/ml, in cases 1, 2 and 3. In response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia (0.1UI/kg), hGH peak values were 30.3, 8.8 and 8.2ng/ml, respectively. IGF1 and IGFBP3 in cases 2 and 3 were normal. In all, TSH, free T4, anti-TPO, anti-TG antibodies, Ca, and P were normal. On follow-up, secondary adrenocortical insufficiency was detected and treated in case 2. Delayed bone age and elongated sella turcica were found. Pituitary MRI scans showed an empty sella in cases 2 and 3. Like other dysmorphic dwarfisms, we were unable to find hormonal deficiencies that could justify the short stature. (Arq Bras Endocrinol Metab 2003;47/1:87-94)

Our objective was to compare food intake and nutritional status of Pemphigus Foliaceus patients (PG) on long term glucocorticoid therapy to a Control Group (CG). Fourteen PG female inpatients receiving prednisone (0.33 +/- 0.22mg/kg) for at least 12 months and twelve CG subjects were submitted to nutritional evaluation, including anthropometry, urinary creatinine determination and serum biochemical measurements, besides 48-h-based food intake records. Groups were compared by Chi-square, Mann-Whitney and "t" tests. PG patients and CG were paired, respectively, in relation to age (24.7 +/- 14.1 vs. 22.0 +/- 12.0 years), body mass index (25.8 +/- 6.4 vs. 24.0 +/- 5.6kg/m2), daily protein intake (132.9 +/- 49.8 vs. 95.2 +/- 58.9g), and serum albumin (median; range) (3.8; 3.5-4.1 vs. 3.8; 3.6-5.0g/dl). However, PG patients had lower height-creatinine index (64.8 +/- 17.6 vs. 90.1 +/- 33.4%), and higher daily energy (3080 +/- 1099 vs. 2187 +/- 702kcal) and carbohydrate (376.8 +/- 135.8 vs. 242.0 +/- 80.7g) intakes. Despite high food, protein and energy consumption, PG patients on long term glucocorticoid therapy had lower body muscle mass than controls, while showing high body fat stores. These findings are possibly related to combined metabolic effects of long term corticotherapy and inflammatory disease plus corticosteroid-induced increased appetite.
