A Atenção Básica à Saúde é estabelecida por meio de ações e métodos que proporcionam a populaçãoserviços de proteção e promoção à saúde, diagnóstico e tratamento de doenças. Consiste em uma estratégiade reorganização do modelo assistencial oferecido à população como forma de suprir as necessidades nessaárea. O Programa Nacional de Melhoria do Acesso e da Qualidade na Atenção Básica, implementado em2011, representa uma estratégia para a melhoria assistencial, com atenção voltada ao trabalho das equipesde Atenção Básica. O objetivo do presente artigo é mostrar o PMAQ-AB, um instrumento de qualificação,cujo propósito é conhecer as condições de acesso da população aos serviços públicos de saúde e a qualidadeda Atenção Básica, e formar uma cultura de avaliação com base nos indicadores. O texto mostra também oincentivo financeiro destinado ao Programa, sua reestruturação desde a implantação, e reúne os resultadosalcançados no Brasil, em Minas Gerais e na cidade de Juiz de Fora (MG), iniciadora do Programa no Estado.A pesquisa é bibliográfica, realizada em livros e artigos sobre o assunto, e resulta também do estudo dasinformações do banco de dados do PMAQ-AB disponibilizados no site do Portal da Saúde. A análiseda estrutura e do processo mostra a evolução do Programa desde os primeiros anos de implantação, suareestruturação em três fases e um eixo estratégico, a atual forma de adesão das equipes de Atenção Básica, anova realidade do acesso e os serviços oferecidos. Os resultados apontam o número de adesões das equipese dos municípios ao Programa, a mobilização dos gestores e dos profissionais envolvidos, apresentando umdesempenho satisfatório em termos de inovação e de fortalecimento da Atenção Básica.
