Los pastizales naturales e implantados son el alimento más económico para el ganado vacuno que tienen los productores, siendo la especie Megathrysus maximus una de las más utilizadas en los potreros paraguayos. Las pasturas y los cultivos forrajeros son atacados por diversos hongos, siendo uno de ellos el hongo del género Claviceps. Estos hongos atacan a las inflorescencias de las plantas forrajeras produciendo un exudado azucarado y esclerocios que pueden producir diferentes micotoxinas causando ergotismo en animales vacunos. La especie Claviceps maximensis se presenta parasitando inflorescencias de Megathyrsus maximus en el Paraguay, siendo escasos los informes sobre su biología. En el presente trabajo se determinó la viabilidad de los esclerocios de C. maximensis almacenados a temperatura de ambiente por un periodo de 5 años, obtenidos de inflorescencias del pasto Megathyrsus maximus, provenientes del Chaco Paraguayo. Se utilizó un diseño experimental completamente al azar (DCA) con 300 esclerocios distribuidos en 3 tratamientos y 4 repeticiones, totalizando 12 unidades experimentales. Cada unidad experimental consistió en una bandeja de plástico con arena lavada húmeda esterilizada y 25 esclerocios. El objetivo general de esta investigación fue evaluar diferentes temperaturas para la germinación de esclerocios de Claviceps maximensis. Se observó que la temperatura más favorable para la germinación de esclerocios de Claviceps maximensis fue de 20°C, presentando el mayor número de esclerocios germinados (17%).
