Il saggio ha l'obiettivo di contribuire al dibattito sulle forme molteplici del ‘vivere la professione accademica' nell'università italiana contemporanea. Presenta i primi esiti di un'esperienza di ricerca sulle trasformazioni della professione realizzata a Napoli presso l'Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II realizzata attraverso la conduzione di interviste in profondità ad accademici nell'area delle scienze umane e sociali. Il lavoro è strutturato in due parti. Nella prima parte del saggio si tratteggiano le principali pressioni cognitive ed etiche sostenute e promosse dalla messa in azione di meccanismi di governo, classificazione, visualizzazione e incentivazione del campo accademico e dei suoi soggetti nell'università italiana. La seconda sezione del saggio, partendo dalle narrazioni del sé accademico proposte dagli intervistati, fornisce uno spaccato significativo dei diversi modi di ridefinizione della professione accademica nel quale si possono individuare due principali linee di tensione. La prima riguarda l'accountability verso i diversi pubblici e beneficiari del lavoro accademico, mentre la seconda riguarda i valori fondanti della professione accademica ed il rapporto tra professione ed organizzazione.
