Children and their mothers have poor quality sleep in paediatric wards. This may affect the child's behaviour, recovery and pain tolerance. Sleep deprivation adds to parental burden and stress. Sound levels are significantly raised in hospital and may contribute to poor sleep. Reduction in the level of noise might lead to an improvement in sleep, affecting the quality of stay of both parent and child.
Study objective-The aim was to investigate relationships for residents of English district health authorities between rates of discharges from acute hospitals for all conditions and variations in discharge rates for eight common conditions (five surgical, three medical).Design
The authors describe a program in which third-year psychiatric residents participate as ex-officio members on the boards of community service agencies. Experience as board members gives residents a broad understanding of issues related to the delivery of community mental health services and encourages them to continue community involvment after their training is completed.
