RESUMO O artigo analisa articulações entre senhores e escravos em grandes propriedades do termo de Monte Alto, no Alto Sertão da Bahia, durante o século XIX. As terras vastas e propícias ao desenvolvimento da agricultura e da pecuária permitiram atividades diversificadas. O fim do tráfico Atlântico (1850) e o intenso tráfico interprovincial na região, a partir de 1840, marcaram a vida de muitos cativos, diante da ameaça de venda ao Sudeste do país, dificultando o processo de alforria. Propriedades contaram com escravaria numerosa e economia diversificada, permitindo aos cativos tecer com seus senhores possibilidades de arranjos e negociações de manumissão. Atrelado à História Social da Escravidão, este estudo centra-se no método da ligação nominativa em inventários, livros de notas e correspondências. Um banco de dados permitiu-nos analisar o perfil desses diferentes sujeitos sociais e os graus de articulações estabelecidos entre eles.
