A modalidade de educação à distância, ao possibilitar a flexibilidade nas variáveis educacionais tempo e espaço na prática de ensino e aprendizagem, apresenta desafios às instituições de ensino superior em relação ao abandono e evasão, bem como em relação às políticas de permanência dos alunos até o término do curso. Tem-se por objetivo neste artigo desvelar as políticas sobre a permanência de alunos nos cursos de graduação à distância de uma IES Catarinense. Metodologicamente, trata-se de uma pesquisa bibliográfica, baseando-se na modalidade de pesquisa conhecida como estado da arte ou estado do conhecimento. Para a técnica de coleta de dados foi utilizada a análise bibliográfica e documental, buscando os dados do Plano 20 e Instruções normativas da IES, assim como, o Plano Nacional de Educação – PNE e legislações do Governo Federal que estimulam a permanência dos estudantes nas universidades públicas e privadas. Os resultados revelam que apesar de existirem programas, leis e resoluções que respaldam o papel de políticas institucionais voltadas à promoção da permanência dos acadêmicos ingressantes, ainda faltam condições propícias para a garantia de permanência do estudante no ambiente universitário. Conclui-se que há outros fatores que influenciam no abandono e evasão dos alunos do ensino superior, cujo tema não está presente nas legislações de manutenção e permanência dos alunos universitários no Brasil e na IES analisada.
