O uso dos espaços públicos, no contexto do processo de industrialização-urbanização, historicamente se insere no centro do debate acerca das possibilidades, potencialidades e desafios das práticas socioespaciais que apontam para os sentidos do direito à cidade. Por um lado, estes espaços dão visibilidade à sociabilidade que revela quão complexa é a vida cotidiana nos centros urbanos, ao mesmo tempo em que desvela os limites e desafios das políticas públicas que melhor correspondam aos anseios da população, sobretudo para os segmentos populares inseridos no urbano periférico, em contextos de segregação espacial. A partir da análise de um conjunto de práticas sociais instauradas em parques urbanos, em estudos realizados na metrópole de São Paulo e na cidade de Sorocaba, foram tecidas considerações sobre os sentidos do direito à cidade.
Nos últimos séculos, o advento da indústria impôs severas transformações ao espaço das cidades. Em resposta às mazelas decorrentes deste processo, mas também às demandas do capital, o planejamento urbano, sujeitando-se às mais variadas contradições, passa a ser crescentemente integrado aos processos de urbanização deflagrados. Nas cidades brasileiras, especialmente nas grandes e médias cidades, é comum que se observe uma estreita relação entre a produção do espaço urbano e as políticas de planejamento. Nesse contexto, os condomínios fechados emergem e se associam à expansão da malha urbana, produzindo variados e significativos efeitos no espaço geográfico. Esta pesquisa analisa as consequências do processo de expansão dos condomínios na malha urbana, com foco nos efeitos inerentes ao acesso às áreas verdes e espaços para o lazer. Para isso, à luz do esforço teórico, a pesquisa realizou um estudo comparativo de duas subáreas pertencentes ao mesmo setor censitário: Condomínio Bosque Ipanema, e o Bairro Jardim Botucatu, situados em Sorocaba/ SP. Utilizou-se da fotointerpretação, de análise estatística e de outros métodos associados para a produção e consequente análise dos dados. Os resultados apontaram para a existência de segregação socioespacial a partir das diferenças de estruturas observadas entre as subáreas (Condomínio Bosque Ipanema e Bairro Jardim Botucatu), segregação que se expressa, sobretudo, no acesso às áreas verdes e espaços para o lazer.
O processo de formação territorial dos países latino-americanos envolve a gênese dos primeiros núcleos urbanos, num percurso de transformações socioespaciais e consolidação de um conjunto de sítios históricos urbanos na contemporaneidade. Apresentam-se como lócus para estudos sobre memória, identidade e patrimônio para diversas áreas do conhecimento. A partir da questão sobre a gênese, transformação e devir do espaço público, analisou-se o caso da cidade de Iguape no litoral sul paulista, região do Vale do Ribeira que possui territórios indígenas e quilombolas. Para um estudo comparativo no contexto do cone sul latino-americano, analisou-se a cidade de Colônia do Sacramento (Uruguai) bem como o território de fronteira das missões jesuíticas guaranis entre Brasil, Paraguai e Argentina. Caracterizam-se pela gênese num contexto de disputas territoriais no período colonial e por se constituírem na atualidade como patrimônios históricos, revelando ainda hoje conflitos na apropriação de seus espaços públicos em diferentes níveis que incidem sobre o cotidiano. Neste processo, a noção de espaço público subjaz à racionalidade eurocêntrica presente na concepção dos planos urbanísticos e nos padrões de sociabilidade impostos. Há, neste sentido, um hiato que separa uma concepção hegemônica de ver e compreender o mundo em detrimento daquelas que sucumbiram sob a força da violência no decurso da colonização portuguesa e espanhola. Entende-se que os espaços públicos abrigam uma densidade histórica que expressa a sobreposição de conflitos nos diferentes períodos da formação territorial desde o período colonial, apresentando-se como importante campo de investigação para compreensão do devir.
Partindo do entendimento acerca da importância dos caminhos metodológicos da pesquisa qualitativa no âmbito da Geografia, e do posicionamento acadêmico e social do pesquisador na definição do tema, método e metodologia de pesquisa, destaca-se a relação intrínseca entre a natureza qualitativa e quantitativa dos fenômenos analisados. Esta reflexão é tecida com base na temática acerca das possibilidades de pensar e agir pelo direito à cidade, tendo como estudo de caso o processo recente de valorização e segregação espacial da cidade de Sorocaba.Palavras chave: pesquisa qualitativa, valorização espacial, segregação espacial, direito à cidade, cidade de Sorocaba.
