A progressive global increase in the burden of allergic diseases has affected the industrialized world over the last half century and has been reported in the literature. The clinical evidence reveals a general increase in both incidence and prevalence of respiratory diseases, such as allergic rhinitis (common hay fever) and asthma. Such phenomena may be related not only to air pollution and changes in lifestyle, but also to an actual increase in airborne quantities of allergenic pollen. Experimental enhancements of carbon dioxide (CO) have demonstrated changes in pollen amount and allergenicity, but this has rarely been shown in the wider environment. The present analysis of a continental-scale pollen data set reveals an increasing trend in the yearly amount of airborne pollen for many taxa in Europe, which is more pronounced in urban than semi-rural/rural areas. Climate change may contribute to these changes, however increased temperatures do not appear to be a major influencing factor. Instead, we suggest the anthropogenic rise of atmospheric CO levels may be influential.

The presence of the aeroallergen Pla a 1 in the atmosphere appears to be independent of Platanus pollen counts over the same period, which may be contributing to allergic symptoms and sensitization. The number of polysensitized patients displaying allergy to Platanus suggested that allergic symptoms were caused by co-sensitization or cross-reactivity involving a number of allergenic particles.

This study consisted of a palynological, microbiological, and physicochemical characterization of fifteen samples of Spanish honey sold under quality brands with different botanical and geographical origins from two consecutive harvest years (2010 and 2011). Eight of the fifteen honey samples were classified as monofloral honey from botanical origins Persea americana, Castanea sativa, Rosmarinus officinalis, Eucalyptus sp., and Thymus sp. With regard to microbiological analyses, mold, and yeast counting, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, sulfite-reducing clostridia, and Escherichia coli were not detected in any of the samples. Aerobic mesophilic microorganisms were detected only in some samples and the counts in these cases were low. Despite the great variability between samples, the results obtained in the physicochemical analysis were consistent with the limits set by the Council Directive 2001/100. Honey samples showed high variability between two consecutive harvests, since, even if they had similar geographical origins they showed different nectar floral origins. En relaci on a los an alisis microbiol ogicos los recuentos de mohos y levaduras, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, clostridios sulfito reductores y Escherichia coli no fueron detectados en ninguna de las muestras. Se detectaron microorganismos aerobios mes ofilos solo en algunas muestras y en este caso los recuentos fueron bajos. Aunque se detectaron coliformes, estos podr ıan estar asociados a un origen ambiental. A pesar de la gran variabilidad entre las muestras, los resultados obtenidos en el an alisis fisicoqu ımico se encontraron dentro de los l ımites establecidos por la Directiva del Consejo 2001/100. Las muestras de miel mostraron una gran variabilidad entre cosechas porque aunque tuvieron un mismo origen geogr afico, hubo diferencias en su origen floral.

The use of bioclimatic indices could be a major step forward in the methodology of pollen forecasting. The basis for this proposal is that simple meteorological parameters do not reflect the global status of the atmosphere, but merely some static measurements. However, pollen dispersal is, above all, a dynamic phenomenon, and this fact should be reflected in the variables we used to explain it. Here, we test the two methodologies for routine pollen forecasting by comparing correlation coefficients using the same daily Poaceae airborne pollen data base from León (6 years, from 1994 to 1999) as the dependent variable and either simple daily meteorological variables or compound daily bioclimatic indices as independent variables. Both simple and compound indices reproduced the same profile of evolution of plant eco-physiological requirements, as the length of the study period during the pollen season increased. However, for time frames larger than the main pollen period, bioclimatic indices gave superior coefficients, which seems to indicate that these could be more valuable for pre-season pollen forecasting. The continentality index produced the highest mean coefficient, higher than those generated by any meteorological variable. Furthermore, at least for a Mediterranean climate, site location and evapotranspiration in relation to precipitation seem to be the most promising factors for increasing success when forecasting Poaceae airborne pollen concentration.
