Herein we describe the first homogeneous non-noble metal catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO to methanol. The catalyst is formed in situ from [Co(acac) ], Triphos, and HNTf and enables the reaction to be performed at 100 °C without a decrease in activity. Kinetic studies suggest an inner-sphere mechanism, and in situ NMR and MS experiments reveal the formation of the active catalyst through slow removal of the acetylacetonate ligands.

Catalytic hydrogenation of amides is of great interest for chemists working in organic synthesis, as the resulting amines are widely featured in natural products, drugs, agrochemicals, dyes, etc. Compared to traditional reduction of amides using (over)stoichiometric reductants, the direct hydrogenation of amides using molecular hydrogen represents a greener approach. Furthermore, amide hydrogenation is a highly versatile transformation, since not only higher amines (obtained by CO cleavage), but also lower amines and alcohols, or amino alcohols (obtained by C-N cleavage) can be selectively accessed by fine tuning of reaction conditions. This review describes the most recent advances in the area of amide hydrogenation using H 2 exclusively and molecularly defined homogeneous as well as nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts, with a special focus on catalyst development and synthetic applications. T he development of green and sustainable methods is a central focus of modern organic synthesis and its applications in various areas of the chemical industry. In this respect, many reduction reactions, traditionally employing stoichiometric amounts of metal hydrides with inherent low atom efficiency 1 , can be favorably replaced by catalytic hydrogenations. In fact, the combination of molecular hydrogen and catalysts does not only allow avoiding formation of waste products 2 , it also opens the door to clean transformations based on renewable energies as the conversion of solar or wind energy to "green" hydrogen is likely to be implemented in the coming years. Among the many reduction reactions known, amide hydrogenation can be encountered as one of the most desired considering the importance of the derived amines in several branches of chemical industry. In fact, since the start of the Green Chemistry Institute Pharmaceutical Roundtable in the United States in 2005, several projects aimed to the achievement of a practical amide hydrogenation methodology have been supported 3,4. The long-term interest of the pharmaceutical industry in this specific transformation is explained by the fact that it ideally affords structurally complex amines, present in many of the currently employed drugs. Furthermore, amines are also in bulk and fine chemicals used in the manufacture of plastics, textiles, surfactants, dyes, and many more 5. Amides play a central role in the chemistry of life, as they are the key elements to generate peptides and proteins from amino acid monomers. At the same time, they are present in artificial

Herein, a general and efficient method for the homogeneous cobalt-catalyzed hydrogenation of N-heterocycles, under mild reaction conditions, is reported. Key to success is the use of the tetradentate ligand tris(2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl)phosphine). This non-noble metal catalyst system allows the selective hydrogenation of heteroarenes in the presence of a broad range of other sensitive reducible groups.

A general procedure for the catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines by using a non-noble metal-based system is presented. Co(acac) in combination with tris[2-(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethyl]phosphine efficiently catalyzes the selective hydrogenation of a wide range of (hetero)aromatic and aliphatic nitriles to give the corresponding amines.

Supramolecular Coordination Compounds (SCCs) represent the power of Coordination Chemistry methodologies to self-assemble discrete architectures with targeted properties. SCCs are generally synthesised in solution, with isolated fully-coordinated metal atoms as structural nodes, thus severely limited as metal-based catalysts. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) show unique features to act as chemical nanoreactors for the in-situ synthesis and stabilization of otherwise not accessible functional species. Here, we present the self-assembly of Pd II SCCs within the confined space of a preformed MOF (SCCs@MOF) and its post-assembly metalation to give a Pd II -Au III supramolecular assembly, crystallography underpinned. These SCCs@MOF catalyse the coupling of boronic acids and/or alkynes, representative multisite metallic-catalysed reactions in which traditional SCCs tend to decompose, and retain its structural integrity as consequence of the synergetic hybridization between SCCs and MOF. These results open new avenues in both the synthesis of novel SCCs and their use on heterogeneous metal-based Supramolecular Catalysis.

N‐Alkylamines are key intermediates in the synthesis of fine chemicals, dyes, and natural products, and hence are highly valuable building blocks in organic chemistry. Consequently, the development of greener and more efficient procedures for their production continues to attract the interest of both academic and industrial chemists. Reductive procedures such as reductive amination or N‐alkylation through hydrogen autotransfer by employing carbonyl compounds or alcohols as alkylating agents have prevailed for the synthesis of amines. In the last few years, carboxylic/carbonic acid derivatives and CO2 have been introduced as alternative and convenient alkylating sources. The safety, easy accessibility, and high stability of these reagents makes the development of new reductive transformations with them as N‐alkylating agents a useful alternative to existing procedures. In this Review, we summarize reported examples of one‐pot reductive N‐alkylation methods that use carboxylic/carbonic acid derivatives or CO2 as alkylating agents.

The first direct CH-alkylation of indoles using carboxylic acids and hydrogen is presented. A non-noble metal based catalytic system, [Co(acac)3/Triphos/Al(OTf)3], efficiently catalyses the alkylation of a variety of indoles with a wide range of carboxylic acids.

For the first time, transfer hydrogenation of quinolines and related heterocycles is performed with a non-noble metal based catalyst. [Co(BF4)2·6H2O] in combination with phosphine L1 catalyses selectively, the mild reduction of N-heteroarenes using formic acid as hydrogen donor.
