Procalcitonin (PCT) is a widely used biomarker for the diagnosis of bacterial infections. It is produced by various organs and the liver is considered to be the most important site of production. Severe liver dysfunction has been shown to influence PCT levels. Patients with no sources of infection who have liver disease are observed to have increased serum levels of PCT, thereby reducing the diagnostic utility and value within this particular patient subset. Here, we have summarized the relationship between PCT and liver disease, including liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver transplantation.
This paper describes an experimental study on the oscillation flow characteristics of submerged supersonic gas jets issued from Laval nozzles. The flow pattern during the jet development and the jet expansion feedback phenomenon are studied using a high-speed camera and a pressure measurement system. The experimental results indicate that along the downstream distance, the jet has three flow regimes: (1) momentum jet; (2) buoyant jet; (3) plume. In the region near the nozzle exit a so-called bulge phenomenon is found. Bulging of the jet occurs many times before the more violent jet expansion feedback occurs. During the feedback process, the jet diameter can become several times that of the original one depending on the jet Mach number. The frequencies of the jet bulging and the jet expansion feedback are measured.
This study examines the process of a 240 µm droplet breakup under a shock wave through experiments using a double-pulse laser holographic test technique on a shock tube. The technique allowed for high-resolution data to be obtained at the micron-nanosecond level, including the Weber number distribution of deformation and breakup modes for droplets of different sizes and loads. Results were compared with larger droplets at the same Weber number, revealing that higher Weber numbers result in more difficulty in droplet breakup, longer deformation times, and increased deformation behavior. At low Weber numbers within the critical range, changes in droplet diameter affect the Rayleigh–Taylor waves and alter the droplet’s characteristics. The study also investigates the laws and reasons behind windward displacement variation for hundred-micron droplets at different Weber numbers over time.
In this paper, the supercavitation of the parallel and tandem projectiles moving underwater with high-speed under the condition with/without lateral flows is numerically simulated by the volume of fraction (VOF) model. The motion of the projectiles was handled by the overlapping grid and six degrees of freedom (DOF) techniques. The supercavitation evolution and the hydrodynamic characteristics of the projectiles were analyzed for the parallel and tandem projectiles under different conditions. The results show that the cavity shape is symmetrical under the condition without lateral flows, but is no longer symmetrical under the conditions with lateral flows. The asymmetry of the cavity contour increases with the velocity of the lateral flow. For the parallel projectiles, the change trends of the axial velocity of projectile 1 and projectile 2 are nearly the same. The offset velocity of projectile 1 and projectile 2 increases with the increase in the velocity of the lateral flow. The deflection angle of projectile 1 decreases with the increase in the lateral flow velocity but that of projectile 2 increases with the increase in the lateral flow velocity. At t = 3.0 ms, the deflection angle of projectile 2 is up to 20° under the condition of the lateral flow velocity of 11.25%, while the deflection angle of projectile 1 and 2 under other conditions is in the range of 5°. For the tandem projectiles, the axial velocity of projectile 1 gradually decreases. The change trend of the axial velocity of projectile 2 at first is the same as that of projectile 1, and then the change is dependent on the velocity of the lateral flow. Under the condition of the lateral flow velocity with 11.25%Vp, projectile 2 cannot enter the cavity of the front projectile. The change trend of the axial velocity of projectile 2 is similar as but somewhat slower than that of projectile 1. For the parallel projectiles, the ballistic stability of the projectile on the oncoming side is better than that of the projectile on the backflow side. Whether parallel or tandem projectiles, the ballistic stability of projectile 2 becomes worse with the increase in the lateral flow velocity.
