In this article, a novel linear mmWave antenna array with series‐feed network is proposed to enhance the bandwidth and reduce sidelobe level without increasing the patch size. The proposed linear array is consisted of four identical wideband array elements, which are all under operation TM10 and TM02 modes by loading shorting pin and rectangular slots. Additionally, through loading symmetry circle‐shaped slots for the four elements, impedance matching of linear array is achieved. Furthermore, multi‐parameters unified‐optimization (MPUO) based on imperial competition algorithm (ICA) is proposed to uniformly optimize all linear array parameters. To verify this design, the proposed linear array is fabricated with a small patch area of 7.5 × 3.914 × 0.254 mm3. The measured results show that the bandwidth is enhanced to 2.05GHz, which is 0.57GHz wider than that of simulation. The simulated peak gain reaches 13dBi while the sidelobe level is reduced to about −19 dB at 28.6GHz. Moreover, the computation cost using MPUO is reduced by 98.12% compared with that of independent parameters optimization.
A wideband differential-fed microstrip patch antenna based on radiation of three resonant modes of TM12, TM30, and slot is proposed in this paper. Firstly, two symmetrical rectangular slots are cut on the radiating patch where the zero-current position of the TM30 mode excites another resonant slot mode. In addition, the slot’s length is enlarged to decrease the frequency of the slot mode with little effect on that of the TM30 mode. To further expand the impedance bandwidth, the width of patch is reduced to increase the frequency of the TM12 mode, while having little influence on that of the TM30 and slot modes. Moreover, a pair of small rectangular strips is adopted on the top of the feeding probes to achieve a good impedance matching. Finally, based on the arrangements above, a broadband microstrip patch antenna with three in-band minima is realized. The results show that the impedance bandwidth (Sdd11<−10 dB) of the proposed antenna is extended to 35.8% at the profile of 0.067 free-space wavelength. Meanwhile, the proposed antenna maintains a stable radiation pattern in the operating band.
In this paper, a novel wideband circularly polarized (CP) millimeter wave (mmWave) microstrip antenna is presented. The proposed antenna consists of a central patch and a microstrip line radiator. The CP radiation is achieved by loading a rectangular slot on the ground plane. To improve the 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW), two symmetric parasitic rectangular patches paralleled to a central patch and a slit positioned to the right of the central patch are loaded. To verify this design, the proposed antenna is fabricated with a small antenna of 2.88 × 3.32 × 0.508 mm3. The measured impedance bandwidth (IMBW) for S11<−10 dB of the proposed antenna is 35.97% (22.8 to 33.8 GHz). Meanwhile, the simulation result shows that the 3-dB ARBW is 15.19% (28.77 to 33.5 GHz) within impedance bandwidth, and the peak gain is from 5.08 to 5.22 dBic within 3-dB ARBW. The proposed antenna is suitable for CP applications in the Ka-band.
A novel broadband microstrip antenna under operation of TM1/2,0, TM10 and TM12 modes through a shorting wall and slots is proposed in this paper. Initially, an inverted U-shaped slot is adopted around the feeding point, which achieves a good impedance matching on TM10 mode and separates the patch into two parts. Additionally, a shorting wall is added underneath the edge of smaller patch to excite another onequarter resonant mode, i.e., TM1/2,0 mode of smaller patch close to TM10 mode to expand the impedance bandwidth. Further, the antenna width is enlarged and two symmetrical vertical rectangular slots are cut on the patch to reduce the frequency of TM12 mode to form a broadband. Based on the arrangements above, a wide impedance bandwidth with three minima can finally be achieved. The results show that the impedance bandwidth of proposed antenna for |S11|<-10 dB is extended to 26.5% (23.5-30.67 GHz), which is three times of the conventional antenna at same profile. Moreover, a stable radiation pattern at broadside direction is realized over the operating band.
