AbSTRACTThis study aimed to quantify the litter and nutrients amount and to estimate the decomposition rate in areas of mesophytic forest and 'Cerradão' in the Ecological Station of Pirapitinga. To evaluate litter and nutrients devolution 10 conic litter traps were randomly distributed in an area 0.1 ha in each area of study, with monthly evaluations. The litter decomposition in the areas of study was evaluated by using litter bags. The total production of litter was 2.50 and 2.92 Mg ha -1 yr -1 for mesophytic forest and 'Cerradão' areas, respectively. The nutrients devolution importance order was nitrogen> potassium> phosphorus. The mesophytic forest showed more homogeneous distribution of litter fall over the year and higher values of total annual litter and nutrients, the highest values were observed at the dry season. The half-life decomposition of leaf litter was equivalent between areas, about 161 days in the mesophytic forest area and 173 in 'Cerradão' area.
ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study were to characterize the floristic and to calculate the phytosociological parameters of species present in the areas of 'campo sujo' and 'cerrado' sensu stricto in the Ecological Station of Pirapitinga, Minas Gerais state (ESEC). For the floristic and phytosociologic survey, a total of 190 plots of 100 m 2 each were allocated, where all the individuals with circumference at soil level (CSL) ≥ 16 cm in areas of 'campo sujo' and 'cerrado' sensu stricto were sampled. The parameters of frequency, density, dominance, and importance values and Shannon and Pielou indexes were calculated. The floristic similarity between areas was determinated by Sorensen index. In the study areas, a total of 3,224 individuals distributed in 81 species, 70 genera and 40 families were sampled. The richest families were Vochysiaceae and Fabaceae. The cerrado sensu stricto was the vegetal formation with the highest richness of species (81) and highest density (2.257 ind ha -1 ). Both areas have studied with high diversity and ecological dominance and have low diameter distribution in the form of inverted-J, indicating the predominance of young individuals.

Quanto à distriuição das frações húmicas verificou-se, em todas as áreas, predomínio da fração HUM.Palavras-chave: plantios homogêneos, matéria orgânica, carbono do solo Stocks of carbon and nitrogen and distribution of humic substances under different forest covers A B S T R A C TTo evaluate organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stocks and humic substances distribution (fulvic acid (FA), humic acid (HA) and humin (HUM)) soil samples were collected in the 0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-40 cm depths in areas of Mimosa caesalpinaeolia, Carapa guianenses and secondary forest in FLONA Mário Xavier, Seropédica (RJ). The secondary forest area presented the highest C and N stock values. As for the humic fractions distribution, in all areas the prevalence of HUM fraction was observed. The highest values of AF, AH and HUM fractions occured in the secondary forest area. The highes contents of C and N stock and the humic substances content in the secondary forest area may be in function of the higher clay content verified in this area. As for distribution of humic frations in all areas HUM was found to be predominant.
