AbstractCopper Canyon is a zone of deep geologic depressions within the Sierra Madre Occidental region. Its physical and biological features have singled it worldwide. The objective of this study was to obtain taxonomic information on the plant species. The study site has an area of 126 653 hectares, extending over the Batopilas and Urique Municipalities, on the southwestern portion of the State of Chihuahua, bordering the States of Sonora and Sinaloa. A subtropical type climate dominates the Copper Canyon providing high temperatures from March to July and rainfall from June to September. The plant communities are mainly Tropical Deciduous Forests, with dominant plant species. The 5 year study (1998 -2003) resulted in a floristic check list of about 770 species, (184 genera and 121 families). The most dominant families in term of species were: Poaceae 134 species, Asteraceae 78 species, Fabaceae 76, Solanaceae 24, Euphorbiaceae 20, Mimosaceae 19, Malvaceae and Scrophulariaceae with 18 species each. It was concluded that the Copper Canyon biodiversity is highly rich and that the majority of the plant species were concentrated in the Tropical Deciduous Forest which is the dominant plant association compared to the Oak Forest and Coniferous Forest found in the higher areas of the region.
Palabras Claves: Asociaciones vegetales, vegetación desértica, conglomerados, biodiversidad Abstract Desert plant communities are characterized by specific fragile conditions due to environmental factors. The Desert Ecosystem plays a very important role, not only for the wide area occupied but also for its specific characters and species diversity, some of which are considered endangered. The objective of this study was to define classes, vegetation associations and area occupied within the study zone using plant cover values and presence of plant species. Data were obtained from 110 sampling sites, through the GAP Analysis methodology. Cluster analysis method to group homogeneous classes with plant cover and species structure applying the Ward minimum variance technique was used. Results depicted similarity among observed sites (r2 = 80,93) which means good confidence in the associations; three groups were identified with 2 clusters each. Group 1 with 23 sites and 9 dominant species; group 2 with 28 sites and 2 dominant species; and group 3 with 58 sites and 7 dominant species. Plant species present in the area with more than 50% cover are: Larrea tridentata and Prosopis glandulosa.
Copper mining is the largest industrial activity in Northern Chile, a region that relies mostly on imported energy resources thus making the mining sector vulnerable to the rising cost of fuel oil and electricity. The extraction of copper is mostly accomplished by hydrometallurgy, a three-step low energy process consisting of heap leaching, concentration by solvent extraction, and metal recovery by electro-winning. Since the content of copper in its ore tends to degrade as the mining operation proceeds, higher leaching temperatures would be needed along with increasing energy requirements. In order to address this demand and considering that the region has one of the highest levels of solar radiation and clear skies, the authors assessed the solar pond technology for rising the temperature of the leaching stream. The working principle of such technology is presented, as well as its mathematical formulation, restrictions, and assumptions, aiming to simulate the performance of a solar pond and to size a suitable setup. The results indicate that this technology can provide sufficient heat to raise the temperature to a range of 50 to 70 C throughout the year with an annual gross thermal supply of 626 GWh. In order to minimize the loss of water and salt from the pond, a closed salt cycle is suggested. Savings of up to 59 000 tons of diesel oil per year and the avoidance of 164 000 tons of CO 2 per year could be achieved with a solar pond effective area of 1.43 km 2 reaching an average efficiency of 19.4%. Thus, solar pond technology is suitable for attaining the goal of increasing the leaching temperature while diminishing fuel costs and greenhouse emissions. V C 2012 American Institute of Physics.
